Step by step
An afternoon in the Agafay desert
Afternoon
Pickup and the drive south
Your driver collects you from your riad or hotel. The city gives way to farmland and then to the stony hills of Agafay, about an hour out.
Late afternoon
Camel ride, quad or buggy
Choose a camel ride across the plateau or a quad or buggy session with an instructor. Or simply sit with mint tea and the view of the Atlas.
Sunset
Sunset at a desert camp
Watch the light go gold over the hills from a desert camp. Many camps serve dinner with music; some have a pool for an earlier lunch visit instead.
Night
Stars, then back to Marrakech
Away from the city lights the sky fills with stars. Your driver brings you back to your door when you are ready. Lalla Takerkoust lake is an optional stop on the way.
Driver, guide or both
Driver, camp and activities arranged
Your own driver takes you to the camp and back. A guide is rarely needed in Agafay; the camp team runs the activities. Tell us what you want and we confirm the camp and the details in your quote.

Agafay desert day trip: your questions
Is the Agafay desert worth it?
Yes, if you have an afternoon and want a desert evening close to Marrakech: wide views to the Atlas, a camel ride, a sunset dinner and the stars. If you want sand dunes, you need two nights or more in the Sahara instead.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
About an hour at the wheel on our planning road map, before stops, so it works as a half day or an afternoon into the evening.
Are there sand dunes in Agafay?
No. Agafay is a stony, hilly desert. The great sand dunes are at Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, much further south.
How much is an Agafay day trip?
It depends on the camp, the activities and your group. We do not publish fixed prices: tell us what you want and we send a free quote within 24 hours.
