Overview

5 days, Marrakech to Merzouga

This private 5-day Morocco itinerary loops out of Marrakech and back, crossing the High Atlas at the 2,260m Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou, the kasbah-lined Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. It climaxes with a sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga and a night in a Sahara desert camp before the scenic drive home. It is the most efficient way to combine Morocco's imperial city with a genuine night in the desert.

Suitability

Is this 5-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 5 days and want to see Marrakech, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and beyond
  • It is your first trip to Morocco and you want a proven, well-paced route
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

The journey, day by day

Your 5-day Morocco itinerary

A full breakdown of every day — morning, afternoon and evening, plus where you eat, where you sleep and what to know before you set off. Everything is private and fully adjustable.

01

Day 1: Arrive Marrakech & the Medina

Marrakech

Touch down in Marrakech, the "Red City" founded by the Almoravids in 1070, and settle into a traditional riad inside the UNESCO-listed medina. The afternoon eases you into Morocco with a guided walk past the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque and through the labyrinthine souks before the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square erupts into life at dusk. Expect a sensory rush of spice stalls, Gnaoua musicians, henna artists and grilled-food vendors. This first day is intentionally gentle, letting travellers acclimatise before the desert road begins tomorrow.

Airport Transfer & Riad Check-in

Private transfer from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) to your riad in the old medina, welcomed with a glass of sweet mint tea. Time to freshen up before exploring.

Travel note · Marrakech can feel overwhelming at first - stay relaxed, keep small notes for tips, and agree a 7:30 AM departure for tomorrow.

02

Day 2: Over the Atlas to Aït Benhaddou & the Dades Valley

Dades Valley · 330 km · 6 hours drive

Leave Marrakech early and climb the N9 through the High Atlas, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m, the highest major road pass in Morocco. Descend to Aït Benhaddou, the earthen ksar inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 and a backdrop for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After lunch you skirt Ouarzazate, the "door of the desert," then thread the Skoura palm oasis and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to overnight in the dramatic Dades gorges.

03

Day 3: Todra Gorge & Camel Trek into the Sahara

Merzouga · 255 km · 4 hours drive

A scenic morning brings you to the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where the Todgha River has carved a slot canyon with limestone walls up to 300m high that narrow to barely 10m - a magnet for rock climbers. From there the road runs east through Erfoud and Rissani, the gateway towns of the Tafilalt date oasis, to Merzouga at the foot of Erg Chebbi. In late afternoon you mount a dromedary and ride into the dunes for sunset, reaching your private desert camp by nightfall.

Morning

1-2 hours

Todra Gorge Walk

Stroll the canyon floor beneath sheer 300m cliffs as the river runs alongside. Watch climbers on the walls and browse Berber rug sellers before the drive east.

Afternoon

3-4 hours

Drive to Merzouga via Erfoud & Rissani

Cross the stony hamada and date palmeries of the Tafilalt, passing Erfoud (famous for fossils) and Rissani, the historic caravan market and cradle of the Alaouite dynasty.

Evening

Ride a camel caravan over the Erg Chebbi dunes - which rise to roughly 150m - as the sand glows orange. Arrive at your camp for a tagine dinner, Berber drumming and stargazing.

04

Day 4: Sahara Sunrise & the Long Road Back to Marrakech

Marrakech · 560 km · 9 hours drive

Rise before dawn to watch the sun break over the Erg Chebbi, the most photogenic moment of the whole trip, then ride your camel back to Merzouga for breakfast and a hot shower. Today is the big drive: you retrace the southern route through Ouarzazate and back over the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech, around 560km in total. The changing light on the kasbahs and red mountains keeps the journey memorable, and you reach the Red City by early evening for a relaxed final night.

Morning

3 hours

Desert Sunrise & Camel Return

Climb a nearby dune for the sunrise, then trek by camel back to the village. Freshen up at a local auberge before the long but scenic drive west.

Afternoon

5-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is 5 days enough for Morocco?

Five days is enough to combine Marrakech with one night in the Sahara on a focused route. It covers the medina, the High Atlas, Aït Benhaddou and the Erg Chebbi dunes, but it does involve two longer driving days. If you prefer a slower pace, the 6-day version adds a full desert day.

How far is the Sahara Desert from Marrakech?

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are roughly 560km from Marrakech by road. There is no straight highway, so the journey crosses the High Atlas and the southern oases and is broken over two days outbound on this itinerary.

What is the drive time to Merzouga from Marrakech?

Driven in one push it takes about 9-10 hours, which is why this tour splits the outbound trip across two days, overnighting in the Dades Valley. The return to Marrakech is done in a single day of around 9 hours of driving.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. The itinerary is fully private with your own air-conditioned 4x4 or minivan and a dedicated English-speaking driver-guide, so you can adjust stops, photo breaks and meal times along the way.

What is the best time of year for a 5-day Morocco trip?

March to May and September to November offer the best balance of warm days and cool nights for both Marrakech and the desert. Summer brings extreme Saharan heat, while winter desert nights can drop near freezing.

Do you sleep in the Sahara Desert?

Yes. You spend one night in a tented camp among the Erg Chebbi dunes, reached by a sunset camel trek. Luxury camps offer private en-suite tents, a sit-down dinner, Berber music and excellent stargazing.

How high is the Tizi n'Tichka pass?

The Tizi n'Tichka tops out at 2,260m, making it the highest major mountain pass in Morocco. The N9 road over it links Marrakech with Ouarzazate and offers dramatic Atlas scenery.

Is Aït Benhaddou worth visiting?

Absolutely. Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site (inscribed 1987), one of the best-preserved earthen ksars in Morocco, and a famous film location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

How much does a 5-day Morocco tour cost?

As a private tour, expect roughly $780 per person at the budget level, around $1,650 mid-range and $3,750 for luxury riads and premium desert camps. Prices fall as group size rises since the vehicle and driver are shared.

What should I pack for the desert?

Bring layers: light, breathable clothing for hot days and a warm fleece for cold nights, plus a scarf for sand, sunglasses, sunscreen, closed shoes for the camel trek and a small overnight bag, leaving your main case in the vehicle.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Five days is enough to pair Marrakech with one Sahara night, but expect two longer driving days to make it work.
  • Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) give the most comfortable temperatures for both city and desert.
  • Desert nights are cold year-round - pack a fleece even if days are hot.
  • Carry small 20-50 MAD notes for tips, toilets and souk purchases.
  • Book the desert camp at least 3-4 weeks ahead in peak season.
  • Take motion-sickness tablets for the winding Tizi n'Tichka pass.
  • Download offline maps before leaving Marrakech - signal is patchy in the south.
  • Drink bottled water and eat at busy stalls with high turnover.

Packing list

What to pack

  • Comfortable closed walking shoes for medinas and dunes
