Tangier sits at the crossing of Europe and Africa, where the Atlantic narrows into the Strait of Gibraltar and Spain is visible on a clear day. That position has given the city a genuinely cosmopolitan character built over millennia — Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Moroccan layers all survive in its streets, its food and its arts scene.
Where Marrakech and Fes overwhelm with intensity, Tangier rewards a calmer kind of exploration. What can you do in Tangier in a day?
Comfortably: the Kasbah and medina in the morning (roughly two hours with a guide), lunch in the old town, then Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules in the afternoon. That covers the city’s greatest hits without rushing. If you have more time, the Grand Socco, the Légation Museum and the bay corniche fill a second half-day nicely.
Can you do Chefchaouen as a day trip from Tangier?
Yes — it’s one of the most popular excursions from Tangier. The drive is roughly two hours each way on good roads. We typically leave by 8 am, spend three to four hours exploring the blue medina with a guide, have lunch, and return to Tangier by early evening. It’s a full but very manageable day. If you’d prefer to spend a night in Chefchaouen and travel on, we can arrange that too.
Is Tangier worth visiting?
Absolutely — Tangier is one of Morocco’s most underrated cities. Its position at the crossing of Europe and Africa gives it a genuinely cosmopolitan character: layered history (Phoenician, Roman, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Moroccan), great food, a lively arts scene and views that stretch across the strait to Spain. It’s also an excellent gateway if you’re arriving by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras.
What are the best day trips from Tangier?
Chefchaouen (2 hrs south) and Asilah (40 min south) are the two most popular. Tetouan — another beautifully preserved medina city with a UNESCO-listed old town — is about an hour away and often missed by visitors. For a longer circuit, a two-day route can take in Chefchaouen and Tetouan before continuing south or returning to Tangier.

How do I get to Tangier?
Tangier is unusually well connected. Tangier-Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) sits about fifteen minutes from the centre with flights across Europe and Morocco. Fast ferries cross the strait from Tarifa (about one hour) and Algeciras in Spain to Tangier Med port. The high-speed Al Boraq train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca in a couple of hours. What is the Tangier American Legation Museum?
