Why March Is Peak Travel Season

March marks the beginning of Morocco's golden travel window. Winter rain retreats, temperatures climb to a comfortable 18-25°C, and the landscape transforms from winter brown to spring green. Almond trees blossom across the Anti-Atlas, wildflowers carpet the valleys, and the air carries the first warmth of the Mediterranean spring.

Every region of Morocco is accessible in March. The Sahara is warm without being oppressive. The Atlas Mountains trails reopen after winter snow (lower elevations). Coastal towns enjoy mild temperatures and manageable winds. Cities buzz with energy as outdoor cafes fill and rooftop terraces reopen for the season.

Crowds are noticeably lighter than April and May — March is the sweet spot between winter quiet and peak spring rush. Hotels have good availability, guides are less stretched, and you get the spring weather without the spring crowds.

March Weather by Region

Marrakech

High: 25°CLow: 10°CRain: 3-4 days

Warm, sunny days. Comfortable medina exploration. Jacaranda trees begin blooming.

Fes

High: 20°CLow: 8°CRain: 5-6 days

Pleasant but still some rain. Pack a light waterproof. Perfect walking temperature.

Sahara Desert

High: 26°CLow: 10°CRain: 0-1 days

Ideal desert conditions. Not yet hot. Comfortable for full-day activities.

Essaouira

High: 20°CLow: 12°CRain: 3-4 days

Mild and breezy. Water still cool for swimming (17°C) but great for surfing.

Chefchaouen

High: 17°CLow: 7°CRain: 5-6 days

Rain clearing. Misty mornings. Wildflowers begin in the Rif foothills.

Atlas Mountains

High: 14°CLow: 2°CRain: Some snow above 3000m

Lower trails open. Snow remains on peaks. Waterfalls at full force from snowmelt.

What to Do in March

Top Experiences

  • Almond Blossom Festival — Tafraoute in the Anti-Atlas celebrates the almond harvest in early March with music, dance, and local festivities.
  • Desert tours — Perfect Sahara weather before summer heat arrives. Camel treks, luxury camping, and dune exploration.
  • Atlas Mountains hiking — Lower valleys and passes open for trekking. Ourika Valley waterfalls at peak flow from snowmelt.
  • Photography — Almond blossoms, wildflowers, green landscapes, and clear skies create the year's best photo conditions.
  • City exploration — Walk Marrakech and Fes medinas in 22°C comfort. Outdoor cafes and rooftop terraces at their best.
  • Surfing — Consistent Atlantic swells. Taghazout and Essaouira offer good waves with fewer surfers than summer.

Ramadan Consideration

Ramadan may overlap with March in 2026-2027 (dates shift annually). If your trip coincides:

  • Tourist restaurants and hotels remain open and serve food
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight
  • Some local restaurants and cafes close during daytime
  • Iftar (sunset meal) is a beautiful shared experience — join one
  • Evening life becomes more vibrant as families gather after sunset
  • Attractions may have reduced hours

Traveling during Ramadan offers a unique cultural window that most tourists miss. With a private guide, it enhances rather than limits the experience.

March Pricing

March is the start of high season. Prices are 10-20% higher than December-February but still below April-May peak rates. Availability is good if you book 6-8 weeks ahead.

What to Pack for March

March requires versatile layers. Days are warm enough for t-shirts, but mornings and evenings need a jacket. Pack a mix:

  • Light layers — t-shirts, long sleeves, and a light sweater
  • A warm jacket or fleece for evenings and desert nights
  • Comfortable walking shoes (waterproof for northern cities)
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses (UV is strong even in spring)
  • Light scarf (sun protection, mosque visits, dust protection)
  • Light rain jacket for occasional showers
