Why Agadir Is the Ideal Base for the South
Agadir is Morocco’s most relaxed resort — ten kilometres of clean golden sand, a modern marina and reliable Atlantic sunshine. It is honestly a modern, planned city, rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, so it lacks the historic medina atmosphere of Marrakech or Fes. What it offers instead is comfort, space and unbeatable access to the south.
The real reward is what lies within an easy drive. Paradise Valley’s palm-lined rock pools are an hour inland; Souss-Massa National Park, one of North Africa’s most important wetlands, sits just to the south; and the walled rose-red city of Taroudant — often called “little Marrakech” — is around ninety minutes east. The Taghazout surf coast, with its famous point breaks and argan cooperatives, is twenty minutes up the road.

How do I get to Agadir, and how does it fit a Morocco itinerary?
Agadir has its own airport, Agadir-Al Massira (AGA), about 30 minutes from the resort, with direct European connections. By road, Marrakech is roughly 3 to 3.5 hours away by highway, making Agadir a natural final stop on a longer circuit. We most often use it as the relaxed exhale at the end of a trip through the imperial cities and the Sahara, or as a warm-winter base with day trips up the surf coast and into the Anti-Atlas. Drive times are planning estimates — confirm before you travel.
What is there to do in Agadir city itself?
Within the city, the headline is the 10 km golden beach and its long promenade, busy with cafés, joggers and grilled-sardine stalls at sunset. Since 2022, a cable car (Morocco's first, a roughly six-minute ride) climbs to the ruined Agadir Oufella kasbah for sweeping bay views. Souk El Had — one of Morocco's largest markets, traditionally closed Mondays — is the best place to buy argan oil near its source. The marina, the Valley of the Birds park and the Amazigh Heritage Museum round out an easy day. Confirm current cable-car prices and souk opening days locally.
Is Agadir good for families?
Very much so. The sheltered crescent bay has gentler, calmer water than most of Morocco's wave-battered Atlantic coast, making it well suited to children.
