Marrakech Tours over the High Atlas to the Dunes

Sahara desert tours from Marrakech are private 4x4 journeys south over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou and the gorges, ending at the great Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga — roughly 560 km, around 9 hours of driving, so almost always split over 2 days with a night in a luxury desert camp. The closer Zagora dunes can be reached in around 7 hours for a shorter 2-day overnight.

Why Marrakech Is the Most Popular Launch Point for the Sahara

Marrakech is the gateway most travellers picture for the Moroccan Sahara, and for good reason: the drive south is a journey in its own right. The road climbs over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at around 2,260 metres, threads past the UNESCO-listed earthen kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, runs through Ouarzazate — the "Hollywood of Africa" — and finally reaches the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. With us the long road becomes part of the experience: a private 4x4, an expert driver-guide, and unhurried stops at the landmarks most tours rush past.

From Marrakech you can reach either the dramatic Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga — the classic three-day route — or the closer Zagora and Draa Valley dunes for a shorter escape. Merzouga is around 560 km away, roughly 9 hours of driving, which is why nearly every Merzouga tour is split over two days with an overnight in a desert camp. Zagora, at around 7 hours, works as a two-day overnight when time is tight. We match the desert and the pace to your time and your appetite for adventure.

One honest caveat worth knowing before you book: a genuine Sahara dune experience cannot be done as a day trip from Marrakech — the great dunes are simply too far. Day trips marketed as "desert tours" only reach the rocky Agafay desert near the city, which has no real sand sea. For true dunes, plan at least two days (Zagora) or three days (Merzouga). Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you lock in dates.

Questions, Answered

Marrakech tours — frequently asked.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert?
Reaching the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga takes around 9 hours of driving across the High Atlas, which is why it is best done as a 3-day trip with an overnight in the desert. The closer Zagora and Draa Valley dunes are around 7 hours away and work as a 2-day trip. Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you travel.
Which Sahara dunes are best from Marrakech — Merzouga or Zagora?
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has the tallest, most cinematic dunes — sand to around 150 metres — and the richest choice of camps, best for 3 days or more. Zagora (and the Draa Valley dunes) is closer and suits a 2-day overnight when time is limited. For the truly remote Erg Chigaga near M'hamid, plan 3 to 4 days.
What overnight stops are on the route from Marrakech?
On the classic 3-day Merzouga route, the first night is usually in or near the gorges — often Dades or Todra — or at a kasbah hotel near Ouarzazate, and the second night is in a desert camp at Erg Chebbi. A 4-day version adds a night in the Skoura palmeraie or a second night at camp. We tailor the overnight stops to your pace.
Is a 2, 3 or 4-day desert tour better from Marrakech?
From Marrakech, 3 days is the realistic minimum to reach Erg Chebbi, sleep in the Sahara and return without spending the whole trip in the car. Two days only reaches the smaller Zagora dunes. Four days or more buys a far more relaxed, scenic pace with two desert nights — the choice of photographers and first-timers.
Can I do a Sahara desert tour from Marrakech in one day?
No — a genuine Sahara dune experience cannot be done as a day trip from Marrakech, because the great dunes are too far. Day trips marketed as "desert tours" only reach the rocky Agafay desert near the city, which has no real sand sea. For true dunes, plan at least 2 days (Zagora) or 3 days (Merzouga).
Can I fly back instead of driving the return leg?
Often, yes. Many travellers prefer a one-way itinerary: drive Marrakech to Merzouga, then continue north and fly home from Fes, or return to Marrakech by a different scenic route. Small airports at Errachidia and (seasonally) near the desert can sometimes shorten the journey. We arrange the logistics around your flights.
What should I pack for the desert and Atlas crossing?
Pack for big temperature swings: warm by day, dropping sharply — even close to freezing on winter nights in the open Sahara — and cooler still on the High Atlas passes. Bring layers and a warm jacket or fleece, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen), closed shoes plus sandals for the sand, and a scarf against wind-blown sand on the camel trek. Camps provide bedding; a head-lamp and power bank are useful.
Is a desert tour from Marrakech suitable for families with children?
Yes — with the long drive split over two days, the Merzouga route works well for families, and Erg Chebbi is the easiest great dune field to reach by paved road, with the widest choice of comfortable camps. The sunset camel trek needs no experience and is a highlight for children, and if a child would rather not ride, most camps can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the same camp instead.
