Moroccan Atlantic coast in summer

Seasonal Guide

Morocco in July

Peak beach season on the Atlantic coast, cool Atlas Mountain trekking, and bargain prices in the simmering imperial cities. July rewards travelers who know where to go.

The Two Moroccos of July

July divides Morocco into two worlds. The interior — Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, and the Sahara — bakes under intense summer heat. Marrakech regularly hits 40°C and the desert becomes dangerously hot. Tourist numbers in these cities drop dramatically, and so do hotel prices.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic coast is at its finest. Essaouira's legendary trade winds (the Alizee) keep temperatures around 24°C — cooler than most European beaches. Agadir offers reliable sunshine and warm swimming water. Surfers flock to Taghazout. The coast buzzes with energy while inland Morocco takes its siesta.

The Atlas Mountains are the third option: cool valleys at 2,000m+, snow-free high passes, and excellent trekking conditions. The Toubkal circuit, Ait Bougmez valley, and Dades Gorge are all accessible and comfortable. Mountain villages offer homestays and authentic Berber hospitality far from the heat.

July Weather by Region

Essaouira

High: 24°CLow: 18°CRain: 0 days

Coolest coastal city thanks to trade winds. Perfect for beach, surfing, and walking. Bring a windbreaker.

Marrakech

High: 38°CLow: 22°CRain: 0 days

Very hot. Medina visits only before 10am or after 6pm. Pool and hammam weather mid-day.

Fes

High: 35°CLow: 19°CRain: 0 days

Hot but slightly less intense than Marrakech. Shaded medina streets help. Morning visits essential.

Agadir

High: 27°CLow: 19°CRain: 0 days

Reliable beach weather. Warmer water (21°C) than Essaouira. Morocco's top sun-and-sand destination.

Atlas Mountains

High: 30°CLow: 14°CRain: 0-1 days

Warm days, cool nights. Excellent trekking. Valleys green and accessible. Mountain refuges open.

Sahara Desert

High: 48°CLow: 25°CRain: 0 days

Dangerously hot. Not recommended. Even luxury camps limit operations. Visit October-May.

Tangier

High: 29°CLow: 20°CRain: 0 days

Mediterranean warmth. Strait of Gibraltar breezes. Good for city and beach combo.

What to Do in Morocco in July

Best Activities

  • Beach holidays — Essaouira, Agadir, Taghazout, and Legzira are at their peak. Swimming, surfing, kitesurfing, and jet skiing.
  • Atlas Mountain trekking — Toubkal summit season. Valley hikes through Berber villages. Cool mountain air.
  • Surfing and kitesurfing — Essaouira trade winds create consistent conditions. Taghazout has reliable Atlantic swells.
  • Coastal food tours — Essaouira seafood at the port grills. Fresh oysters from Oualidia. Agadir fish markets.
  • Early-morning medina visits — Empty souks at 7am in Marrakech or Fes. Dramatic light, no crowds, vendors just opening.
  • Chefchaouen — The Blue City at 600m elevation stays slightly cooler than lowland cities. Best visited early morning.

What to Skip

  • Sahara Desert — Temperatures above 48°C. Sand surface reaches 70°C. Genuinely dangerous for outdoor activities.
  • Multi-day Marrakech stays — More than 1-2 days of extreme heat is exhausting. Use as a gateway, not a base.
  • Interior road trips — Long drives without AC through Draa Valley or deep south are miserable.
  • Midday outdoor activities — Between 12-5pm in any inland city, stay indoors or poolside.

July Prices: What to Expect

July creates a price paradox. Inland hotels drop to their lowest rates as tourists flee the heat, while coastal accommodations reach peak-season pricing. The smart traveler combines both.

Budget

$50-80

per person per day

Basic accommodation, street food, local transport

Mid-Range

$120-200

per person per day

Pool riad, guided tours, private taxi

Luxury

$300-500+

per person per day

Beach resort or luxury riad, private guide, premium dining

Marrakech luxury riads offer 30-40% off peak rates in July. Essaouira hotels sell out weeks ahead — book 2-3 months in advance for coastal stays.
