Why May Is One of the Best Months to Visit
May sits in a sweet spot on Morocco's calendar. The cool, rainy winter is long gone, summer's extreme heat has not yet arrived, and the landscape is still green from spring rains. Temperatures are warm and sunny across most of the country, making it comfortable for everything from city exploration to mountain trekking to beach relaxation.
This is shoulder season, which means prices remain 10-20% below peak summer and autumn rates. Crowds are moderate — noticeably lighter than March-April spring break or the October high season. You get excellent weather without competing for restaurant tables or riad rooms.
May also brings two of Morocco's most celebrated events: the Rose Festival in the Dades Valley and the Gnaoua World Music Festival in Essaouira. Combined with prime trekking conditions in the Atlas Mountains and the start of beach season along the coast, May offers an unmatched combination of culture, nature, and value.
May Weather by Region
Marrakech
Warm and sunny. Perfect for medina walks in the morning and evening. Midday heat is noticeable but manageable.
Fes
Pleasantly warm. Less intense than Marrakech. Ideal for exploring the medieval medina at a comfortable pace.
Sahara Desert
Warm but not yet extreme. Last comfortable month for desert tours. Schedule camel treks for early morning or sunset.
Atlas Mountains
Prime trekking season. Snow melted from most passes. Wildflowers in valleys. Cool nights at altitude.
Essaouira (Coast)
Mild and breezy. Beach season starts. Trade winds pick up late month. Gnaoua Festival atmosphere.
Tangier and the North
Last spring showers possible early May. Otherwise warm and pleasant. Mediterranean beaches opening.
What to Do in Morocco in May
Best Activities
- Rose Festival (Moussem des Roses) — Mid-May in El Kelaa M'Gouna, Dades Valley. Parades, music, a Rose Queen pageant, and the Damascene rose harvest.
- Atlas Mountains trekking — The best month. Snow has cleared, wildflowers bloom, and temperatures at altitude are ideal. Toubkal summit accessible without winter gear.
- Beach season — Essaouira, Agadir, and Taghazout warm up enough for swimming and surfing. Water temperature reaches 18-20°C.
- Gnaoua World Music Festival — Late May or early June in Essaouira. World-class musicians, street performances, and an electrifying atmosphere.
- Rooftop dining — Warm evenings make Marrakech and Fes rooftop terraces perfect for long dinners under the stars.
- Dades and Todra gorges — Comfortable hiking temperatures. Rivers still flowing from spring snowmelt. Dramatic scenery.
What to Consider
- Midday heat in Marrakech — Temperatures hit 30°C+ by midday. Plan indoor activities or rest between 12-3pm, then resume exploring in the cooler afternoon.
- Sahara day trips — Afternoon desert temperatures climb to 35°C. Opt for overnight camps with early-morning and sunset activities instead of midday excursions.
- Wind in Essaouira — Trade winds strengthen through May. Excellent for windsurfing and kitesurfing but can make beach lounging breezy.
May Prices: What to Expect
May is shoulder season — after the spring peak of March-April but before the summer surge of July-August. Accommodation and tour prices are 10-20% below high-season rates, with good availability at most riads and hotels. Rose Festival week in the Dades Valley can see local price increases.
