The Shortest Road to the Blue City
Of all the gateways to Chefchaouen, Tangier is the closest — about 110 kilometres and only two hours or so by road. That makes it a favourite first stop for travellers arriving by ferry from Spain or flying into Tangier, and an easy day trip if you are short on time. The road runs southeast off the northern plains and climbs into the green Rif Mountains where the blue-painted town sits.
It is worth being precise about the train question, because Tangier can mislead. Tangier is a terminus of Morocco's flagship Al Boraq high-speed line — but that line runs south to Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca. It does not go east into the Rif, and there is no railway to Chefchaouen at all. So while you can reach Tangier by fast train, the onward leg to the blue city is strictly by road: a private driver, the CTM coach, or a shared grand taxi.
For most visitors a private transfer is the simplest way to cover this short, scenic hop — door-to-door from the Tangier port, airport or your hotel to your Chefchaouen guesthouse, with no changes. The bus is the budget choice and runs several times a day; the grand taxi is the cheap, local option. This page lays out the trade-offs honestly so you can choose well.
