Overview

8 days, Marrakech to Fes

This private 8-day Morocco itinerary is a one-way crossing from Marrakech to Fes. It pairs two days in the Red City with the High Atlas (Tizi n'Tichka, 2,260m), the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, and two nights in the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. It then heads north through the palm-filled Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas cedar forests to a full guided day in Fes el-Bali, home to the 859 AD Al-Qarawiyyin University. Total route distance is roughly 1,280km, ending at Fès-Saïss Airport.

Suitability

Is this 8-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 8 days and want to see Marrakech, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and beyond
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

Why private

The road then crosses the stony hamada and the date oases of the Tafilalt, passing Erfoud and Rissani - the historic caravan market and birthplace of the ruling Alaouite dynasty - to Merzouga at the foot of Erg Chebbi. At sunset you ride a camel caravan over the dunes to a tented camp for dinner, Berber music and a night of brilliant stars.

Day 5: A Full Day in the Erg Chebbi Dunes

Merzouga

No long transfer today - just the desert. There is time to sandboard, swim at an auberge pool or simply rest before climbing a tall dune for sunset and a second, unhurried night beneath the Saharan sky.

06

Day 6: The Ziz Valley & Middle Atlas to Fes

Fes · 470 km · 8 hours drive

Today is the great northbound crossing, around 470km from Merzouga to Fes. You follow the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms threading dramatic gorges, then climb through Midelt - the "apple town" between the High and Middle Atlas - and over the Col du Zad. The landscape shifts to cedar forest near Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques, and the alpine-looking resort of Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco." You descend into Fes by evening, trading the silence of the dunes for the hum of the world's oldest living medieval city.

Morning

4 hours

Ziz Valley & Midelt

Drive north through the palm-filled Ziz gorges and Errachidia to Midelt, the apple-growing town set between the two Atlas ranges.

Afternoon

You enter at the blue-tiled Bab Boujloud and visit the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas with their dazzling zellij and carved cedar, and pass Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. The afternoon reaches the Chouara tanneries, where leather is still cured in stone vats of natural dye, before you weave the trade souks of metalworkers, weavers and woodcarvers.

Good to know

8-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is 8 days enough to see Morocco's highlights?

Eight days is ideal for a Marrakech-to-Fes route that includes the High Atlas, Aït Benhaddou, two Sahara nights and a full day in Fes. Because it is one-way you avoid backtracking, so the time goes into experiences rather than retracing roads.

Why does the tour end in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech?

Ending in Fes turns the trip into a continuous loop across the country rather than an out-and-back, saving a full day of driving. We recommend an open-jaw flight, arriving in Marrakech and departing from Fès-Saïss Airport.

How far is it from Merzouga to Fes?

It is about 470km from Merzouga to Fes, roughly 8 hours of driving via the Ziz Valley, Midelt, the Middle Atlas cedar forests near Azrou and the resort town of Ifrane.

How far is the Sahara from Marrakech on this route?

The Erg Chebbi dunes are about 585km from Marrakech via Aït Benhaddou and the Dades and Todra gorges. This itinerary splits the journey across two days with an overnight in the Dades Valley.

How many nights are spent in the desert?

Two nights near Merzouga. The first follows a sunset camel trek into a tented camp; the second comes after a full day exploring the Erg Chebbi dunes, villages and oases by 4x4.

Is this a private tour?

Yes, it is fully private with your own air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide, plus dedicated local guides in Marrakech and Fes. The pace and stops can be tailored to you.

What is the best time of year for an 8-day Morocco trip?

March to May and September to November are best, offering warm days and manageable nights across the desert, mountains and medinas. Summer is very hot in the Sahara and winter nights are cold at altitude.

What makes Fes worth a full day?

Fes el-Bali is the world's largest car-free urban area and home to Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and the oldest continuously operating university in the world, plus the Bou Inania madrasa and the historic Chouara tanneries.

How much does an 8-day private Morocco tour cost?

Per person, expect around $1,250 budget, about $2,650 mid-range and roughly $6,200 for luxury riads and premium desert camps. The per-person price drops as the group size grows.

Can I extend the trip after Fes?

Yes. Fes is a natural springboard for Chefchaouen, Meknes and Volubilis, or a fast train to Casablanca and Rabat, so the route is easy to extend by two or three days before flying home.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Ending in Fes is a true one-way route - book an open-jaw flight (into Marrakech, out of Fes) to avoid backtracking.
  • Spring and autumn give the best weather across mountains, desert and medinas alike.
  • Two desert nights plus the high passes mean cold nights - pack warm layers.
  • Fès-Saïss Airport has good links, or take the fast train onward to Casablanca or Rabat.
  • Book the Fes medina guide and desert camp well ahead in peak season.
  • Carry small MAD notes for tips, the desert team and souk purchases.
  • The Ziz Valley and Azrou cedars are highlights of day six - keep the camera handy.
  • Stay close to your guide in Fes el-Bali; the medina is genuinely easy to get lost in.

Packing list

What to pack

  • Comfortable closed walking shoes for medinas and dunes
  • Warm fleece or jacket for desert nights and high passes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
  • A scarf or shesh for sand and sun
  • Modest clothing for mosques, medinas and villages
  • A small overnight bag for the desert camp
  • Reusable water bottle and power bank
  • Camera with spare batteries and memory cards
  • Universal power adapter (Type C/E)
