Suitability

Is this 9-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 9 days and want to see Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou, Dades Valley and beyond
  • It is your first trip to Morocco and you want a proven, well-paced route
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

Why private

Why book this as a private tour?

On a group coach you follow the crowd's clock. On a private Serenity itinerary the day bends to you: a slower morning in the medina, an extra hour at a viewpoint, dinner moved earlier for the kids. You travel with your own licensed driver-guide and air-conditioned vehicle, sleep in hand-picked riads rather than chain hotels, and skip the daily wait for 30 strangers to reboard the bus.

Marrakech

Touch down in the Red City and ease into Morocco at your own pace. Marrakech was founded by the Almoravids around 1070 and its ochre ramparts still ring the medina. Marrakech

A full day inside the Red City covers its grandest monuments and most peaceful corners. The 19th-century Bahia Palace shows off the finest zellige tilework and painted cedar ceilings in the city, while the 16th-century Saadian Tombs were sealed for centuries and only rediscovered in 1917. In the afternoon you trade the medina bustle for the cobalt-blue Majorelle Garden, restored by Yves Saint Laurent, and its adjoining Berber Museum.

Dades Valley · 330 km · 6.5 hours drive

Leave Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest sealed pass at 2,260 metres, with Berber villages clinging to the slopes. On the far side you reach Ait Benhaddou, the fortified earthen ksar made famous by Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. From there you head east through Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani toward the great sand sea of Erg Chebbi. With a local guide you visit the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas, pass the Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and recognised as the world's oldest continuously operating university, and look over the Chouara tanneries where leather is still dyed in stone vats as it was in medieval times. 07

Day 7: Meknes & Roman Volubilis

Meknes · 160 km · 3 hours total (round trip) drive

A day excursion to two more imperial highlights. Volubilis, about 33 kilometres from Meknes, is Morocco's best-preserved Roman city: founded in the 3rd century BC and expanded under Rome, its triumphal arch, basilica and in-situ floor mosaics earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997. Nearby Meknes, the 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, is guarded by the colossal Bab Mansour gate and the vast Heri es-Souani granaries built to feed twelve thousand horses.

Morning

2 hours

Volubilis Archaeological Site

Guided walk among the Roman ruins: the Arch of Caracalla, the Capitol and famous mosaics such as the Labours of Hercules.

Afternoon

3 hours

Meknes Imperial City

See Bab Mansour, Place el-Hedim, the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum and the immense Heri es-Souani granaries and royal stables.

Evening

1.5 hours

Travel note · Volubilis has little shade, so go earlier in the day and bring a hat and water. Holy moulay-town Moulay Idriss is a worthwhile photo stop en route.

08

Day 8: Fes to Chefchaouen, the Blue City

Chefchaouen · 200 km · 4 hours drive

Head north into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, founded in 1471 as a fortress against Portuguese incursions and later home to Andalusian refugees. Its medina is washed in dozens of shades of blue, a tradition variously linked to the town's Jewish heritage and to keeping interiors cool. The drive of roughly 200 kilometres takes about four hours through olive-covered hills. You arrive with time to lose yourself in the photogenic lanes before sunset.

Morning

4 hours

Drive through the Rif

Scenic transfer from Fes via Ouezzane, climbing into the green Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen.

Afternoon

Evening

After a relaxed breakfast on a terrace you transfer to your departure point. Good to know

9-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is 9 days enough to see Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes and Chefchaouen?

Yes. Nine days comfortably covers two nights in Marrakech, a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, two nights in Fes with a Meknes and Volubilis excursion, and a night in Chefchaouen. It is a moderate pace with a couple of long driving days rather than a rushed trip.

How much driving is involved on this 9-day Morocco itinerary?

About 1,450 kilometres in total. The longest single day is the Sahara-to-Fes drive of roughly 460 kilometres (around 8 hours) across the Middle Atlas, broken up with stops in Midelt, the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests near Azrou.

How far is Chefchaouen from Fes?

Chefchaouen is about 200 kilometres north of Fes, a drive of roughly 4 hours through the Rif Mountains via Ouezzane. There is no train to Chefchaouen, so this leg is done by private vehicle or bus.

Where do you sleep in the Sahara on this trip?

You sleep in a desert camp among the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, reached by a sunset camel trek. Luxury camps offer en-suite tents, a Berber dinner, live drumming and excellent stargazing, with sunrise over the dunes the next morning.

Can you really visit Volubilis and Meknes in one day from Fes?

Yes. Volubilis sits about 33 kilometres from Meknes and roughly 70 kilometres from Fes, so both fit into a single day excursion. Volubilis is Morocco's best-preserved Roman city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its in-situ floor mosaics.

What is the best time of year for this itinerary?

March to May and September to November offer the best balance of warm days and bearable desert heat. Summer can exceed 45 degrees Celsius around Merzouga, while winter brings cold nights in the desert and possible snow on the Atlas passes.

Do I need a 4x4 vehicle?

The main roads are sealed, so a comfortable air-conditioned minivan works for the whole route. A 4x4 is preferred for the desert section if you want to explore deeper into Erg Chebbi, and it adds comfort on the long transfer days.

Which airport should I use for departure?

Ending in Chefchaouen, the nearest airport is Tangier Ibn Battouta, about 2 hours away, with European connections. Fes-Saiss Airport is roughly 4 hours south and is a good alternative. Flying into Marrakech and out of Tangier or Fes avoids backtracking.

How much does a 9-day private Morocco tour cost?

Expect roughly 1,550 USD per person for a budget private trip, around 3,150 USD for mid-range riads, and 6,750 USD or more for luxury accommodation, based on two travellers sharing. Prices fall with larger groups sharing the vehicle and guide.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Fly into Marrakech and out of Tangier or Fes to avoid backtracking on this one-way route
  • Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) give the most comfortable temperatures
  • Desert nights are cold even after hot days, so always carry a warm layer
  • Carry small dirham notes for tips, tanneries terraces and souvenir bargaining
  • Download offline maps before you travel; the medinas have weak mobile signal
  • Respect local custom by dressing modestly and asking before photographing people
  • Book the Sahara camp and Fes guide at least two months ahead in high season
  • Keep your passport handy; some riads request it briefly at check-in

Packing list

What to pack

  • Comfortable broken-in walking shoes for cobbled medinas
  • Warm layer and light hat for cold desert nights
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
  • Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for religious sites
  • A scarf or shemagh useful against desert wind and sun
  • Reusable water bottle to refill in the vehicle
  • Camera with spare batteries and storage
  • European Type C/E power adapter
  • Personal medication and motion-sickness tablets
  • Daypack for the overnight desert-camp stay
