Overview

6 days, Marrakech to Merzouga

This private 6-day Morocco itinerary loops from Marrakech over the 2,260m Tizi n'Tichka pass to Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and the kasbah-lined Dades and Todra gorges, then dedicates a full free day to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. With two nights in the Sahara - a sunset camel trek, a 4x4 desert circuit and two starlit nights - it trades one long driving day for a far deeper desert experience before the scenic return to Marrakech. Total route distance is about 1,230km.

Suitability

Is this 6-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 6 days and want to see Marrakech, Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and beyond
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

Why private

Why book this as a private tour?

You travel with your own licensed driver-guide and air-conditioned vehicle, sleep in hand-picked riads rather than chain hotels, and skip the daily wait for 30 strangers to reboard the bus.

The relaxed first evening lets you find your feet, taste your first tagine and rest before the road south, which over the next days will carry you across the Atlas to the dunes.

Ouarzazate · 195 km · 4 hours drive

Climb the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m, pausing at Berber villages and viewpoints, then descend to Aït Benhaddou. This UNESCO ksar (inscribed 1987) sat on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech and has doubled as Jerusalem, Rome and Yunkai on screen. After exploring its kasbahs you continue the short distance to Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa," home to Atlas Studios and the restored Taourirt Kasbah. Overnighting here keeps tomorrow's desert run comfortable rather than rushed.

03

Day 3: Kasbah Road to the Sahara via Dades & Todra

Merzouga · 360 km · 5-6 hours drive

Today is the classic desert approach, around 360km of kasbah country from Ouarzazate to Merzouga. You pass the Skoura palm oasis and Kelaa M'Gouna (heart of the May rose harvest), drop into the Dades gorges, then reach the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where 300m limestone walls close to about 10m apart. From Tinghir the road runs east through Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga, where a camel caravan carries you over the Erg Chebbi dunes to your camp for sunset, dinner and a sky thick with stars.

Morning

3 hours

Skoura, Roses & Dades Gorges

Walk the floor of the Todra Gorge beneath towering cliffs, then continue east across the Tafilalt oasis via Erfoud and Rissani toward Merzouga.

Evening

Camel Trek & Desert Camp

Ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and reach your tented camp for a Berber tagine, drumming around the fire and stargazing.

Travel note · Bring only an overnight bag to camp and leave your case in the 4x4. Closed shoes and a warm layer make the camel ride and night far more comfortable.

04

Day 4: A Full Day in the Sahara

Merzouga

The reward for the extra day is a slow, immersive day in the desert with no long transfer. After watching sunrise over the dunes you spend the day on a 4x4 circuit of the Erg Chebbi region: the underground khettara water channels, the black-volcanic village of Khamlia famous for its Gnaoua music, a seasonal nomad family, and the Dayet Srji lake where flamingos gather after rain. As the heat fades you climb a high dune for sunset before a second, unhurried night under the stars.

Morning

2-3 hours

Sunrise & Dune Time

Watch the sun rise over Erg Chebbi, then breakfast at camp. Optional sandboarding or a quiet walk among the dunes before the day's excursion.

Afternoon

4-5 hours

4x4 Erg Chebbi Circuit

Off-road tour to Khamlia for live Gnaoua music, a nomad family tea stop, the khettara channels and the fossil-rich plains around Merzouga.

Evening

2-3 hours

Sunset Dune & Second Desert Night

Return to camp or a dune-edge auberge, climb a tall dune for golden hour, then a relaxed dinner and stargazing on your second Saharan night.

Travel note · The midday desert sun is fierce - the 4x4 circuit is timed around it. Carry plenty of water and protect cameras from fine sand.

05

Day 5: Return Across the Atlas to Marrakech

Marrakech · 560 km · 9 hours drive

Leave the dunes after breakfast for the long, scenic drive back to Marrakech, about 560km via Ouarzazate and the Tizi n'Tichka. The route rewinds the kasbah landscapes in shifting light, with a lunch break in Ouarzazate before the climb back over the Atlas. You reach Marrakech by early evening with time to settle into a medina riad and enjoy a final relaxed dinner - a quiet courtyard meal or one last rooftop overlooking the rooftops and the Koutoubia minaret.

Morning

Day 6: Marrakech at Leisure & Departure

Marrakech

With no early start, the final day belongs to Marrakech. Use the morning for the things the road did not allow: the cobalt-blue Majorelle Garden, the carved cedar and zellij of the Saadian Tombs, last bargaining in the souks, or a slow hammam. Your driver then transfers you to Menara Airport in good time for your flight, ending a trip that has woven together the Red City, the High Atlas, the kasbah valleys and two nights beneath the Sahara stars.

6-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is 6 days enough to see Morocco and the desert?

Six days comfortably pairs Marrakech with a proper Sahara experience. The extra day over a 5-day trip becomes a full free day at Erg Chebbi, so you get two desert nights and a 4x4 excursion instead of a second long drive.

How far is it from Ouarzazate to Merzouga?

It is about 360km from Ouarzazate to Merzouga, roughly 5-6 hours of driving through Skoura, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, and the Tafilalt oasis towns of Erfoud and Rissani.

What is the drive time to Merzouga from Marrakech?

Driven straight through it is around 9-10 hours. This itinerary splits the outbound journey across two days, overnighting in Ouarzazate, so no single day feels rushed until the return drive on day five.

How many nights do you spend in the Sahara?

Two nights near Merzouga. The first follows a sunset camel trek into a tented camp; the second comes after a full day exploring the dunes, villages and oases of the Erg Chebbi region by 4x4.

Is this a private tour?

Yes, it is fully private with your own vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide. You can flex the pace, add stops and tailor the desert day to your interests, from photography to Gnaoua music.

What is the best time for a 6-day Morocco trip?

March to May and September to November are best, with warm days and cool nights. Summer Saharan temperatures can exceed 45°C, and midwinter desert nights can fall close to freezing.

How high is the Tizi n'Tichka pass?

The Tizi n'Tichka reaches 2,260m and is the highest major road pass in Morocco. You cross it twice on this round-trip, once outbound and once on the return to Marrakech.

What is there to do on the full desert day?

A 4x4 circuit of Erg Chebbi typically visits Khamlia village for live Gnaoua music, a nomad family, the khettara water channels and the fossil plains, plus sunrise and sunset over the dunes and optional sandboarding.

How much does a 6-day private Morocco tour cost?

Per person, expect roughly $920 budget, around $1,980 mid-range, and about $4,500 for luxury riads and premium desert camps. The per-person rate drops as group size increases.

Is the itinerary suitable for families?

Yes. The relaxed full desert day and the option to spend the second night in a fixed dune auberge rather than a camp make it well suited to families with children, as do the private vehicle and flexible timings.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • The sixth day pays off as a full desert day rather than another long drive - the most relaxed way to do this loop.
  • Spring and autumn are ideal; avoid July-August Saharan heat and the cold midwinter desert nights.
  • Two desert nights mean two warm-layer nights - pack accordingly.
  • Tip camp staff and camel handlers in small MAD notes.
  • The Kelaa M'Gouna rose harvest peaks in May if your timing allows.
  • Charge cameras and power banks fully before the desert - power at camps is limited.
  • Wrap a scarf around your face on windy dune days to keep out fine sand.
  • Book luxury camps well ahead in high season (October and Easter).

Packing list

What to pack

  • Comfortable closed walking shoes
  • Warm fleece or jacket for two desert nights and the Atlas pass
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
  • A scarf or shesh for sand and sun
  • Modest clothing for villages and religious sites
  • A small overnight bag for the desert camp
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Power bank and camera with spare batteries
  • Universal power adapter (Type C/E)
  • Personal medications, lip balm and hand sanitiser
