Fly into Marrakech if your trip centres on the south, the desert, or the Atlas — you save a 2.5-hour transfer and land in the city you actually want. Choose Casablanca if it gives you a cheaper or more direct long-haul flight, or if you plan to start in Fes, Rabat, or the north.
I get asked this almost every week, and my honest answer is that the right airport depends entirely on where your trip is heading, not on which city is bigger. Marrakech Menara (RAK) is small, easy, and ten minutes from the medina — you can be sipping mint tea in a riad courtyard within an hour of landing. For anyone whose journey revolves around Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, or the Sahara, it's simply the front door.
Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN) is Morocco's main international hub, so it often wins on flight choice: more direct long-haul routes, more frequent connections, and sometimes a noticeably cheaper fare. The catch is that Casablanca itself is a working business city most travellers spend little time in, and it sits 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Marrakech. There is a comfortable, cheap train from the airport, but it's still half a travel day.
Where Casablanca genuinely shines is a north-first or imperial-cities itinerary. If you're starting in Fes, Rabat, Chefchaouen, or Tangier, CMN puts you in the right half of the country and the fast train network does the rest. I've routed plenty of clients in through Casablanca and out through Marrakech (an 'open-jaw' ticket) so they never double back — that's often the smartest move of all.
So weigh it like this: if the fare difference is small, fly into the city you want to wake up in. If Casablanca saves you real money or a connection, take it and treat the transfer as part of the adventure — or build the north into your route so the landing point makes sense. Either way, a pre-arranged driver removes the only real friction.
