Look for a licensed local operator who answers your specific questions, gives a written day-by-day itinerary and clear pricing, names the guides and vehicles, and never pressures you. Read recent independent reviews, check who actually runs the trip on the ground, and trust how they communicate before you pay.
After years of doing this, the single best signal is how a company answers your first few emails. Do they read what you asked and reply specifically, or send a copy-paste brochure? A good operator treats your enquiry as the start of a conversation, asks about your pace and interests, and is happy to say "that itinerary is too rushed, here is a better version." Generic, instant, pushy responses tell you what the trip will feel like.
On the practical checklist: they should be a registered, licensed operator (not just a freelancer with a van), give you a written itinerary with real driving times and named overnight stops, and break down what is and is not included. Ask who actually runs the tour on the ground — many overseas "operators" simply resell a local Moroccan company, which is fine, but you want to know who you are really dealing with and whether your guides are licensed.
Reviews matter, but read them properly. Look for recent, detailed reviews across more than one platform, and pay attention to how the company responds to criticism. A handful of mixed reviews handled gracefully is more trustworthy than a wall of five-star one-liners. Be sceptical of anyone whose only reviews are on their own site.
Finally, weigh the things that protect you: clear deposit and cancellation terms in writing, traceable payment, and a real human you can reach. We would genuinely rather you compare us against two other operators than book blind — a company confident in its trip is comfortable being one of several quotes you hold.
