For most people a tailor-made trip wins — same logistics handled, but built around your pace, interests and budget, often for a similar price. Pick a package tour if you want the lowest set price and zero decisions on fixed dates. Pick tailor-made if you want flexibility, privacy and a trip that fits you rather than the crowd.
I'll declare my hand: for most travellers I think tailor-made is the better way to do Morocco — but a package tour is the right call for some, so let me argue both honestly rather than just sell my own model. A "package tour" is a pre-set itinerary with fixed dates, a fixed route and usually a group, sold at a set price. "Tailor-made" means a trip designed around you — your dates, pace, interests and budget — with all the same logistics (drivers, riads, guides, desert camps) handled for you. The confusion people have is assuming tailor-made must be far more expensive. Often it isn't.
Choose a package tour if a few things genuinely suit you. It's typically the lowest headline price, because everything is standardised and shared, so if rock-bottom cost is the priority it's hard to beat. It removes every decision — route, hotels, timings are all chosen for you, which is a relief if planning stresses you out. And it comes with a built-in group, which sociable travellers enjoy. The honest trade-offs are rigidity (fixed dates and pace, the slowest member setting the rhythm), less privacy, generic hotel choices, and a route designed for the average traveller rather than for you — including stops you may not care about and rushed time at ones you love.
Choose tailor-made if flexibility and fit matter to you. You decide how long in each place, what to prioritise (food, history, adventure, relaxation), which riads suit your taste and budget, and how hard or gently to travel — and a good designer quietly steers you away from tourist traps toward better, more authentic choices. It's private, it moves at your pace, and it can be built up or down to almost any budget. The genuine caveats are that it requires a bit of input from you up front, and a bespoke trip with private guiding can cost more than the cheapest group package — though for two or more people sharing, the gap is usually smaller than expected, and you can dial the spec to control it.
So my decision rule: if you're firmly budget-led, happy on fixed dates, and want zero decisions, a package tour does the job. If you want a trip that fits your interests, pace and dates — with the same logistical safety net — go tailor-made, which for most people delivers a noticeably better trip for a comparable spend. The whole point of a tailor-made trip is that it's yours, so tell us your budget honestly and we'll build to it; you don't sacrifice affordability to get a trip that actually suits you.
