About This Experience

The medina of Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and has been a centre of artisanal excellence for over a millennium, but the most extraordinary workshops are hidden behind unmarked doors that no ordinary visitor would ever find. This four-hour private atelier tour, led by a cultural curator with deep personal connections to the master artisan families, grants you exclusive access to workshops that are not open to the general public. You begin in the zellige tile atelier of a fourth-generation master mosaic artist, where you watch raw clay transformed into the mathematically precise geometric tiles that adorn every palace and mosque in the city. The master explains the meditative discipline required to chip each tile by hand, and you try your hand at assembling a small mosaic pattern under his guidance. Next, you descend into the ancient Chouara leather tannery -- not the tourist viewpoint, but the workshop floor itself -- where you observe the entire process from raw hide to finished product, learning why Fassi leather has been prized in Europe since the Middle Ages. In a quiet courtyard, a master brassworker demonstrates the art of hand-engraving intricate arabesques into copper and brass trays using techniques unchanged since the 14th century. Your final stop is the embroidery atelier of a renowned Fassi needlework family, where women create breathtaking silk-on-linen tableaux that can take up to two years to complete. Throughout, your curator shares the economics, social structures, and cultural significance of each craft, transforming a fascinating visual experience into a profound understanding of why Fes is a living museum of human artistry.
