Kasbah-Terrace Lunch
On the route
The classic stop on the desert route: a tagine on a kasbah or riad terrace with valley and mountain views — the unhurried pause between Marrakech and the Sahara.

Pre-Sahara · The Door of the Desert
Ouarzazate is the “door of the desert” and the Hollywood of Africa — where the High Atlas gives way to pre-Saharan plateau. Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones all shot here, drawn by the light; for most travellers it is the unforgettable one-day hinge between Marrakech, the UNESCO ksar of Ait Benhaddou and the great valley road trips.
The dishes, markets and food experiences worth your appetite — drawn from our own guides on the ground. We point you to what to eat and where the locals eat it, not invented restaurant rankings.

Be honest about the rhythm: Ouarzazate is usually a half-day to one-day stop, often an overnight en route to the Sahara, not a multi-day destination. Used well, that day is one of the most memorable on the whole circuit. Confirm current prices when you book.
UNESCO · 30 kmThe fortified mud-brick ksar stacked up a hillside above the Ounila River, a UNESCO site since 1987 and the most famous image of southern Morocco — breathtaking at dawn before the buses.
In townA labyrinthine 19th-century kasbah of ornate mud-brick towers in the heart of town — once home to the powerful Glaoui clan.
Hollywood of AfricaThe studios and standing sets that earned Ouarzazate its “Hollywood of Africa” name — ancient-Egypt, Roman and desert backlots you can tour, plus the Musée du Cinéma in town.
Two great drivesOuarzazate is the hinge between two of North Africa’s great drives — the Draa Valley palm corridor south, and the Skoura-to-Dades kasbah road east.
Atlas Film Studios, the Cinema Museum and the Taourirt Kasbah — a full Ouarzazate day on the desert route.
The towered ksar at dawn, then the granary at the summit and the view back over the valley.
A hidden palm oasis of Berber villages just off the plateau — green, quiet and cool.
Either of the two great valley road trips that radiate from town toward the dunes and gorges.
