The 2027 solar eclipse in northern Morocco.

On the morning of 2 August 2027 the path of totality crosses the Strait of Gibraltar close to Tangier, with nearly five minutes of darkness on the central line, according to NASA. We plan private trips around it: a viewing spot inside the path, a driver who can move with the weather, and the north of Morocco around it.

Where and when totality falls

Figures from NASA’s path table for this eclipse. Totality depends on exactly where you stand, so check NASA’s interactive map before you settle on a spot.

The date
Monday 2 August 2027, in the morning.
Where totality falls
NASA’s central line runs along the Strait of Gibraltar at about 35.7° N, passing close to Tangier. The path of totality is roughly 235 km wide, so the far north of Morocco sits inside it.
When, Morocco time
The Moon’s shadow crosses the Strait at about 08:45 to 08:50 UT, which is Morocco’s local time since the country returned to GMT on 20 September 2026. The partial phases run for over an hour on either side of that.
How long
NASA’s path table gives about 4 minutes 48 seconds to 4 minutes 54 seconds of totality on the central line across the Strait. Away from the central line it is shorter, falling to nothing at the edge of the path.
Height of the Sun
Around 37 to 39 degrees above the eastern horizon at totality, so a clear view to the east matters more than height.

A private trip around the eclipse

One way to shape it, about five to seven days in the north. We change it to fit your dates, flights and pace.

  1. Before

    Arrive in the north

Fly into Tangier, come over by ferry from Spain, or land in Casablanca and travel north by road or train. A night or two in Tangier gives time to settle and choose your viewing spot.

  2. 2 August

    Eclipse morning

An early start with your driver-guide to a spot inside the path with an open eastern view, picked the day before from the forecast. Because the car is private, you can move inland or along the coast if cloud sits over the Strait.

  3. After

    Chefchaouen and Tétouan

The blue town in the Rif mountains and the white medina of Tétouan, both a few hours’ drive away, with cooler hill evenings than the cities further south.

  4. Optional

    Asilah, Fes or further

The Atlantic town of Asilah for a slower end, or on to Fes and Volubilis. August is very hot inland and in the Sahara, so we keep long drives short or early.

Read about the north in Tangier and Chefchaouen, or Morocco’s dark desert skies on our stargazing page.

  • Plan early

The eclipse falls in early August, in the middle of Europe’s summer holidays and the busy summer ferry season across the Strait. Expect strong demand for rooms and cars in the north and send your dates as soon as you know them.

  • The weather

Early August is usually dry and sunny in northern Morocco, but sea mist and low cloud can sit over the Strait some mornings. We cannot promise clear sky; a private car and a flexible plan are the best hedge.

  • The heat

The coast around Tangier is milder than the interior, where Fes and Meknes are very hot in August. We plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and rooms with air conditioning.

  • Eye safety

Look at the Sun only through eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard; sunglasses are not safe. Take them off only during totality, when the Sun is fully covered, and put them back on as the light returns. Cameras and binoculars need their own solar filters on the front.

  • Eye safety follows NASA’s eclipse safety guidance. Read it before you travel.

The 2027 eclipse in Morocco: your questions

Where in Morocco can you see the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027?

In the far north. NASA’s central line runs along the Strait of Gibraltar close to Tangier, and the path of totality is roughly 235 km wide, so Tangier and the north coast sit inside it. Further from the central line totality is shorter. Fes, Rabat and the south are, by our reading of NASA’s path, outside it and see a partial eclipse only. Check NASA’s interactive map for your exact spot.

What time is the 2027 eclipse in Tangier?

Totality crosses the Strait at about 08:45 to 08:50 UT, which is Morocco’s local time since the country returned to GMT on 20 September 2026. The partial phases start and end more than an hour either side.

How long does totality last in northern Morocco?

NASA’s path table gives about 4 minutes 48 seconds to 4 minutes 54 seconds on the central line across the Strait. The further you are from the central line, the shorter it is. The longest totality of this eclipse is in Egypt, not Morocco.

Do I need eclipse glasses?

Yes, for every partial phase. Use glasses or viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, remove them only while the Sun is completely covered, and put them back on as soon as it reappears. Follow NASA’s eclipse safety guidance.

Is the weather likely to be clear?

Early August is usually dry and sunny in northern Morocco, but sea mist and low cloud can form over the Strait in the morning. Nobody can promise a clear sky; with a private driver you can move to a clearer spot on the day.

How much does an eclipse trip to Morocco cost?

It depends on the number of nights, the style of stays, how many of you travel and how far beyond the north you go. Every trip is private, so we price your exact route and send the quote free within 24 hours.
