Step by step

The day, step by step

  1. Illustrative Roman arch and columns at Volubilis

    Morning

    Volubilis

Start at the Roman site of Volubilis: the triumphal arch, the basilica and the house floors where mosaics of Orpheus and the Labours of Hercules are still in place.

  2. Late morning

    Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

A few minutes away, the white hill town of Moulay Idriss, resting place of the founder of Morocco’s first dynasty. A viewpoint looks over its two hills.

  3. Afternoon

    Meknes

Lunch in Meknes, then Bab Mansour and El Hedim square, the Heri es-Souani granaries of Moulay Ismail and, when open, his mausoleum.

  4. Evening

    Back to Fes

About an hour back to your riad in Fes.

Driver, guide or both

A local guide at Volubilis and in Meknes

Your own driver links the three places. A local guide reads the Roman town with you and tells the story of Moulay Ismail in Meknes; it is the day where a guide adds most.

Volubilis day trip: your questions

Is Volubilis worth visiting?

Yes. It is the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, with mosaics still in place on the house floors, and it pairs easily with Moulay Idriss and Meknes in one day from Fes.

How far is Volubilis from Fes?

About an hour at the wheel on our planning road map, before stops. Meknes is about half an hour from Volubilis and an hour from Fes.

Do I need a guide at Volubilis?

It is not required, but a local guide makes the ruins far easier to read. Most of our travellers take one for Volubilis and Meknes.

How much is the Volubilis day trip?

It depends on the vehicle, the guide and your group. We do not publish fixed prices: every day trip is quoted for you, free, within 24 hours.
