The best honeymoon riads are small, restored medina houses with a private rooftop, a courtyard pool or plunge pool, a hammam, and just a handful of suites for intimacy. We favour boutique riads in Marrakech and Fes, plus a few sea-facing properties in Essaouira, matched to each couple's style.

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built inward around a courtyard, and that architecture is what makes it so romantic for a honeymoon. The world is shut outside the medina walls; inside there is a fountain, orange trees, a plunge pool, lanterns, and a rooftop where you take breakfast and aperitifs. The best honeymoon riads have only six to ten rooms, so it feels like a private home rather than a hotel.

For couples I look for three things: a suite with character (a private terrace or its own plunge pool is the dream), an on-site hammam or spa so you never have to leave for your rituals, and a host who understands the assignment — the quiet upgrade, the rose petals, the candlelit dinner in the courtyard arranged without you asking twice. In Marrakech and Fes there are some genuinely magical small riads that do exactly this.

I also match the riad to the couple. Design-led modernists want the cool, minimalist conversions; couples who want full Arabian-Nights romance want the carved cedar, zellige tile and rose gardens of a grander palace riad. For a coastal finish, a riad inside the Essaouira ramparts with sea views is a softer, breezier counterpoint to the medina intensity.

One honest note: riads are old buildings with stairs and no lifts, sound carries across the courtyard, and the very best honeymoon suites book out months ahead for spring and autumn. We hold the right room early and brief the host on what you are celebrating — that briefing is half of what makes a riad honeymoon feel personal rather than just pretty.
