Day two is a full-day High Atlas and Ourika Valley excursion to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, around 60km south of the city. Suitability

Is this 3-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 3 days and want to see Marrakech, Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You prefer comfort over roughing it — riads, hotels and a private vehicle throughout

Why private

Why book this as a private tour?

On a group coach you follow the crowd's clock. On a private Serenity itinerary the day bends to you: a slower morning in the medina, an extra hour at a viewpoint, dinner moved earlier for the kids. You travel with your own licensed driver-guide and air-conditioned vehicle, sleep in hand-picked riads rather than chain hotels, and skip the daily wait for 30 strangers to reboard the bus.

The journey, day by day

Your 3-day Morocco itinerary

A full breakdown of every day — morning, afternoon and evening, plus where you eat, where you sleep and what to know before you set off. Everything is private and fully adjustable.

01

Day 1: Imperial Marrakech & the Medina

Marrakech

Settle into a medina riad and spend the first day on the headline sights of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The morning links the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque with the sumptuous 19th-century Bahia Palace. After lunch you visit the 16th-century Saadian Tombs and the ruined El Badi Palace, then enter the souks to watch dyers, coppersmiths and slipper-makers at work. The day ends in Jemaa el-Fnaa, a UNESCO oral-heritage square, where dusk brings storytellers, drummers and the famous food stalls.

Morning

3 hours

Koutoubia Mosque & Bahia Palace

Start at the Koutoubia gardens beneath the city's tallest minaret, then tour the Bahia Palace, a late-19th-century grand vizier's residence rich in zellige, stucco and painted cedar ceilings.

Afternoon

Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace & Souks

Visit the marble-and-zellige Saadian Tombs, the storied ruins of El Badi Palace, then weave through the souks with your guide to the spice and lantern markets.

Evening

Jemaa el-Fnaa After Dark

Soak up the spectacle of Jemaa el-Fnaa - acrobats, Gnaoua music and orange-juice carts - then dine on a rooftop terrace overlooking the floodlit square.

Travel note · Agree an early start for tomorrow's mountain day trip (around 8:30 AM) and pack a light layer - the Atlas is cooler than the city.

02

Day 2: High Atlas & Ourika Valley Day Trip

Ourika Valley · 130 km · 3 hours round-trip drive

Swap the medina for the mountains on a full-day private excursion into the High Atlas, just south of Marrakech. The road climbs the Ourika Valley along a tumbling river past Berber villages, terraced fields and roadside argan-oil and saffron co-operatives. At Setti Fatma you can hike to the famous seven waterfalls and lunch on a riverside terrace with the peaks rising behind. The valley is a green, cool contrast to the city and a gentle taste of Berber mountain life before you return to Marrakech by early evening.

Morning

2-3 hours

Drive into the Ourika Valley

Leave Marrakech and climb south into the High Atlas. Stop at a Berber village and a women's argan-oil co-operative, with photo halts over the river valley and snow-dusted summits.

Afternoon

At Setti Fatma, hike the rocky path to the seven waterfalls (the first is an easy 30-40 minutes) with a local guide, then enjoy a riverside tagine lunch before the scenic drive back.

Evening

2 hours

Return to Marrakech

Arrive back in the city by early evening. Freshen up at your riad and enjoy a relaxed dinner in the medina or a quiet courtyard restaurant.

Travel note · The waterfall path is rocky and crosses the river on stepping stones - wear grippy shoes. Tip your local mountain guide a small amount at the end.

03

Day 3: Gardens, the Madrasa & a Hammam Finale

Marrakech

Spend your last day on the calmer, more artistic side of Marrakech. The Majorelle Garden - created by painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and rescued by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980 - sets cobalt-blue buildings against bamboo and cacti, alongside the Berber Museum and the YSL Museum that opened in 2017. Back in the medina, the 16th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa shows off Morocco's finest carved cedar and zellige. A traditional hammam scrub and massage is the perfect send-off before your airport transfer.

Morning

2.5 hours

Majorelle Garden & YSL Museum

Arrive early at the Jardin Majorelle to enjoy the famous blue villa and exotic planting before the crowds, then the adjoining Berber Museum and Musée Yves Saint Laurent.

Afternoon

Tour the beautifully restored Ben Youssef Madrasa (reopened 2022) and the Mouassine quarter, then the Le Jardin Secret riad-garden for a final rooftop panorama over the medina.

3-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Is 3 days enough in Marrakech?

Three days is the ideal length for a first visit. Two days cover the medina, palaces, souks, Jemaa el-Fnaa, the Majorelle Garden and Ben Youssef Madrasa, while a third day frees you for a High Atlas or Agafay desert day trip. It is unhurried without feeling rushed.

What to do in Marrakech in 3 days?

Day one: Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace, the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa. Day two: a High Atlas and Ourika Valley day trip with a waterfall walk. Day three: the Majorelle Garden and YSL Museum, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, Le Jardin Secret and a traditional hammam.

What are the best day trips from Marrakech?

The most popular day trips are the High Atlas and Ourika Valley (about 60km south, with waterfalls and Berber villages), the Agafay stone desert for camel or quad rides and sunset dinners, Imlil and the foothills of Mount Toubkal, and the Atlantic city of Essaouira (about 2.5 hours each way).

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?

The Ourika Valley begins around 30km south of Marrakech, with Setti Fatma and its waterfalls about 60km away - roughly a 1.5-hour drive each way. It is the closest and greenest High Atlas escape, which is why it makes such a popular full-day trip.

Is Marrakech safe and walkable?

Marrakech is generally safe for tourists and the car-free medina is best explored on foot, with most sights within a short walk of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Stay alert for touts and pickpockets in crowds, use licensed guides, and agree any price in advance. Day trips into the mountains are straightforward with a private driver.

Where is the best area to stay in Marrakech?

A riad inside the medina near Jemaa el-Fnaa puts you within walking distance of the main sights. The Mouassine and Kasbah quarters are quieter but still central, while the modern Gueliz district offers hotels, restaurants and easier car access for day trips.

How much does a 3-day Marrakech trip cost?

As a private trip with a day excursion, expect roughly $345 per person at the budget level, around $735 mid-range and about $1,680 for luxury riads and premium guiding. Site entries are modest, and the main variable cost is your choice of accommodation.

What is the best time of year to visit Marrakech?

March to May and October to November offer warm, comfortable days perfect for both city walking and mountain trips. Summer can exceed 38C, making midday sightseeing tough, while winter is mild by day but cold at night and in the Atlas.
