Pick a group tour for lower cost, ready-made company and zero planning. Pick a private tour for flexibility, pace, privacy and a guide who tailors everything to you. Group suits solo travellers and tighter budgets; private suits couples, families and anyone wanting control. Morocco is affordable, so private is more attainable here than in Europe.

I arrange both constantly, so I can be even-handed. A group tour — a set departure with a fixed itinerary and a dozen-or-so other travellers — is the cheaper, simpler option. Someone else has done all the planning, the price per person drops because costs are shared, and you get built-in company, which is a genuine gift for solo travellers wanting camaraderie and a ready-made social circle. If budget is the priority and you're happy to flow with a schedule, group tours are a brilliant, low-stress way to see Morocco.

The honest downsides are control and pace. You move on the group's timetable, not yours — you can't linger an extra hour in a souk you love or skip a stop that bores you, you're at the mercy of the slowest or loudest members, and there are sometimes optional cooperative shopping stops that come with commissions. Bigger groups also mean less personal attention from the guide and more time spent herding. It's a trade of flexibility for affordability and ease.

A private tour flips that: it's just your party with a dedicated driver and guide, and the whole trip bends around you. You set the wake-up time, decide how long to spend everywhere, request changes on the fly, eat where you fancy, and travel at your own rhythm. The guide's attention is entirely yours, which makes the cultural insight far deeper. The catch is cost — you're not sharing it — and you lose the automatic social aspect that solo travellers sometimes miss.

Choose a group tour for the best price, zero planning and instant company — ideal for solo travellers and tighter budgets. Choose private for flexibility, privacy, pace and tailored depth — ideal for couples, families, multi-generational trips and anyone who likes being in control. The lovely thing about Morocco specifically is that, because costs here are lower than in Europe, a private driver-guide is far more affordable than people expect — so for two or more travellers, private is often within reach and, in my view, the more rewarding way to experience the country.
