Kandy has no airport for long-haul flights — start from Colombo, about three hours away. From Colombo connect through a Gulf hub — Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi — for roughly 15 to 18 hours total, then continue to Casablanca and onward to Marrakech or Fes.
Kandy itself has no international airport, so every Morocco trip I plan from there really begins in Colombo, around a three-hour drive or train ride away — factor that transfer and a night near Bandaranaike Airport into your schedule. From Colombo the route runs through the Gulf: Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai and Etihad via Abu Dhabi each offer a single connection, with the Gulf-to-Casablanca leg about eight hours. Counting from Colombo, the journey lands around fifteen to eighteen hours door to door. Verify the live schedules and connection windows, since the best build shifts seasonally.
I always remind Kandy clients to treat the Colombo transfer as part of the trip, not an afterthought — an early Gulf-bound departure can mean leaving Kandy the evening before, so I usually plan a hotel night near the airport rather than a pre-dawn dash. From Colombo, Doha and Dubai are my preferred hubs for the comfortable transit and frequent onward service. And I always price an open-jaw routing — into Casablanca, home from Marrakech or Fes — so the Moroccan days run one way instead of looping back.
The time difference puts Morocco about six hours behind Sri Lanka, which is gentle enough that jet lag is seldom a major issue — but I still build a relaxed arrival day with riad check-in, a slow first wander and an early dinner before the desert drive the next morning. For Sri Lankan clients I commonly design seven to ten days; seven covers Marrakech, a Sahara night and Fes nicely, while ten lets the imperial north and the coast join the itinerary without a rush.
On visas, Sri Lankan passport holders currently need a visa for Morocco — check the latest requirements, eligibility and processing times with the Moroccan embassy or the e-visa portal well ahead of booking, and leave room for the paperwork. The rest is routine: draw dirhams from ATMs on arrival rather than sourcing rupee-to-dirham at home, carry a backup card, and pack warm layers for cold desert nights and cool Atlas mornings. Travel in spring or autumn, get the Colombo and Gulf connections right, and Kandy is a fine place to begin a Morocco journey.
