From Monterrey (MTY) the smoothest path is a short hop to a US hub (Houston is closest) or Mexico City, a transatlantic flight to Madrid or Lisbon, then 1.5–2 hours to Casablanca or Marrakech. Expect 18–22 hours and two stops. Mexican passports usually need a Morocco visa — confirm first. Plan 10 days.
Monterrey actually has a small geographic advantage over the rest of Mexico for this trip, and I always point it out: you're close to Houston, which is one of the better US gateways for the Atlantic crossing. So the routing I most often build from MTY is a quick hop up to Houston (IAH) or over to Mexico City (MEX), then a transatlantic flight into Madrid or Lisbon, and finally the short, frequent connection down to Casablanca (CMN) or directly into Marrakech (RAK). It's two stops, but each one is logical and the legs stack up sensibly rather than zig-zagging.
On timing, plan for roughly 18 to 22 hours in total with the two connections, and respect the layovers. I tell Regiomontano travellers to give the European hub a comfortable 2.5–3 hours, because that first transatlantic leg is the one most likely to run late and you do not want to be sprinting for the Casablanca shuttle. If the numbers work out tight, I'd far rather overnight in Madrid or Lisbon on the way out — it splits the journey, resets your body clock, and Iberia and TAP both connect onward to Morocco several times a day so you're never stuck.
Before any of that, the visa. An ordinary Mexican passport generally requires a visa for Morocco, which genuinely catches Monterrey clients off guard because they travel so widely without one. Morocco has been introducing an electronic travel authorisation, and because that system is still evolving the only safe move is to check the current requirement for your specific passport on the official Moroccan consular site and apply with weeks to spare. Verify live schedules and the visa rule together, early — both can shift between seasons and you want no surprises at check-in.
Given the effort to get here from northern Mexico, I design Monterrey trips at 10 days and up so nothing feels rushed. A route I love: arrive Casablanca, train to Rabat or straight to Fes, immerse two nights in Fes's medieval medina, cross to the dunes at Merzouga for a desert overnight, then traverse the High Atlas to Marrakech for the final stretch and fly home from there. Tight on time? A focused 7-day Marrakech–Fes loop with a day in the Atlas still delivers. Use our 10-day itinerary as the skeleton and we'll align the long-haul connections to your MTY start.
