Yes — in a relaxed, bohemian way rather than a glossy resort way. Essaouira is romantic for couples who love sea air, art, fresh seafood and slow strolls: windswept ramparts, sunset on the beach, candlelit riad dinners and a laid-back medina. It’s less hassle than the big cities. The wind and chilly ocean are the main caveats.

Essaouira is romantic, but it is worth being clear about what kind of romance it offers — this is bohemian, salt-air, artistic romance, not five-star poolside glamour. Couples who fall for it love the same things I do: walking the great sea ramparts as the waves crash below, getting pleasantly lost in the whitewashed medina with its blue doors and craft workshops, sharing a platter of just-grilled fish straight off the boats, and ending the day on a rooftop watching the sun sink into the Atlantic. The town has a creative, easygoing soul that lends itself to unhurried time together.

The sunsets are the headline romantic moment. Essaouira faces west across open ocean, so the evening light over the harbour and the offshore Purpura Islands is genuinely spectacular, and there are rooftop bars and restaurants positioned exactly to enjoy it with a drink in hand. Earlier, a stroll along the wide beach as the kitesurfers come in, or a horse or camel walk along the sand toward the dunes at Diabat, makes for a lovely shared afternoon. After dark the medina is gentle and safe to wander, with live gnaoua music in some cafés adding atmosphere.

For where to stay, Essaouira has a great spread of small boutique riads inside the walls with intimate courtyards and rooftop terraces — far more characterful than a chain hotel and ideal for a couple. A candlelit dinner on a private terrace with the sound of the sea and the gulls is easy to arrange and very special. Because the town is compact and low-hassle compared with Marrakech or Fes, couples get to relax into each other’s company rather than constantly navigating crowds and touts.

My honest caveat is the climate. The wind that defines Essaouira can blow romance literally sideways — beach picnics turn into sandblasting, and the ocean is too cold for a romantic swim most of the year. Plan around it: choose sheltered terraces, time beach walks for calmer mornings, and come in late spring or early autumn for the kindest weather. If your dream honeymoon is warm sea and sunbathing, look elsewhere; if it is character, food and atmosphere, Essaouira delivers. Confirm a riad with a good terrace and check seasonal wind before booking.
