Pick Colombia for Caribbean coast, Andes, coffee country, salsa nightlife and lush green energy at great value. Pick Morocco for desert, mountains, ancient medinas and Arab-Berber culture, also superb value and a short hop from Europe. Both are vibrant and affordable; Colombia is tropical-Latin, Morocco is North-African-and-ancient.
Colombia has become one of my favourite places to recommend to friends who want vibrancy without a huge price tag — Cartagena's Caribbean colour, the green Andes and coffee region, Medellín's energy, salsa, and some of the warmest people anywhere. It's a brilliant, joyful, excellent-value destination, and I want to be fair: on sheer infectious liveliness and tropical greenery, Colombia is a serious contender, and beats Morocco hands-down for Latin nightlife and lush mountain scenery.
On value, the two are genuinely comparable — both let mid-range travellers eat, sleep and explore well for far less than Western Europe or North America. The difference is the texture of the vibrancy. Colombia's is tropical and Latin: dancing, fruit markets, Caribbean heat, coffee farms, a music-in-the-streets pulse. Morocco's is older and more sensory-overwhelming: the controlled chaos of the souks, the call to prayer, snake charmers and food stalls on Jemaa el-Fnaa, the haggling, the spice and leather and lantern light. Both buzz; they buzz in completely different keys.
Morocco's edge is the variety-per-mile and the proximity to Europe. In one compact trip you move from medieval cities to the Sahara to the Atlas mountains to the Atlantic coast, all by road, with little jet lag from European hubs. Colombia is bigger and its highlights are more spread out, usually meaning a few internal flights between the coast, the coffee zone and the cities. Safety perceptions also differ — Colombia has improved enormously and the tourist trail is welcoming, but Morocco is one of the more reassuringly stable, easy-feeling destinations in its region for first-timers.
So: choose Colombia if you want tropical Latin energy, salsa nights, Caribbean beaches and green coffee mountains at great value. Choose Morocco if you want ancient-city intensity, desert and mountains, Arab-Berber culture and four landscapes in one short, accessible trip — also at great value. For a European traveller wanting maximum variety with minimum flying time and budget, Morocco's the natural pick; for a Latin-America-and-beaches craving, Colombia is the one. Both punch far above their price.
