For a first-time visitor choosing just one, Marrakech is usually the better pick: easier to reach, more visitor-friendly, and the natural gateway to the desert and Atlas. Fes offers a deeper, more medieval and authentic medina but is harder to navigate and more remote. Many first-timers do both in one week.

First-time visitors weighing Marrakech against Fes are really weighing accessibility versus authenticity. Marrakech is the more forgiving introduction to Morocco: it has the most flight connections, a compact and well-signposted core, abundant riads and restaurants, and a wealth of gardens, palaces and rooftop terraces where you can take a breather from the souks. It also connects effortlessly to the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara, which most first trips want to include.

Fes is, in many ways, the more "authentic" of the two — its medina is older, larger, more medieval and less touristed, with living craft traditions on full display. But that authenticity comes with a steeper learning curve. Fes el-Bali is genuinely disorienting to navigate, hassle in the souks can feel more pointed without a guide, and the city has fewer of the easy comforts and day-trip options that make Marrakech relaxing for newcomers.

If you can only pick one for a first trip, I lean Marrakech, mostly for logistics: you can fly in directly, ease into the country, and pivot straight to the desert or mountains. Choose Fes instead only if craft, history and a less commercial atmosphere are clearly your top priority and you are comfortable with a more challenging medina (ideally with a guide for your first day).

The most common and, frankly, best answer for first-timers is not to choose at all. A classic Morocco week — Marrakech, the Sahara, then Fes, linked by road and the desert route, or by train — gives you both imperial cities plus the dunes in between. If your time only allows one, decide by your own interests rather than by which is "better," because they genuinely serve different travellers.
