Autumn (September–November) is arguably the finest season in Essaouira: warm 21–23°C days, the calmest winds of the year, fewer crowds and a still-swimmable sea (around 20°C in September). It is the rare window when the famously windy town turns gentle and golden.

If you ask me when Essaouira is at its most magical, I'll say autumn without hesitating — and the reason is the wind, or rather the lack of it. September and especially October bring the calmest air of the year as the summer trade winds finally ease. For once you can sit on the beach with a book that stays open, eat lunch at the port without holding your plate down, and feel the town exhale after the summer rush.

The weather in these months is close to ideal: days settle around 21–23°C with that clean Atlantic light, and the worst of the crowds have gone home. I love walking the ramparts at golden hour in October, when the stone glows amber and the medina alleys are unhurried again. It's also harvest season inland — the argan and olive groves are busy, and a day trip into the countryside rewards you with markets at their fullest.

Crucially for beach-lovers, September gives you the warmest sea of the whole year here, around 20°C, lagging behind the air because the ocean takes all summer to heat up. Combined with the dropping wind, early autumn is the one stretch when a proper beach day in Essaouira actually works. By November things cool and the breeze returns, but October stays reliably lovely and is my top pick for a balanced coast trip.

Autumn also rewards food travellers. The fish is superb, café terraces are pleasant again, and you can linger outdoors into the evening with just a light layer. Honestly, if a guest tells me they want Essaouira at its gentlest and most photogenic, I send them in early October — the calmest, kindest face of an otherwise blustery town.
