Hivernage is an upscale district between the medina and Gueliz, known for five-star hotels, manicured streets, rooftop bars, casinos, and the city's nightlife. It's polished, walkable to both old and new town, and very comfortable — though more international-hotel than authentically Moroccan. A strong choice for nightlife lovers and comfort-first first-timers.

Hivernage is the smartest, most manicured corner of central Marrakech — a leafy district that sits neatly between the medina walls and Gueliz, originally laid out as a winter-retreat quarter (its name means 'wintering'). Today it's the city's luxury-hotel belt: broad clean avenues lined with palms, big five-star properties, the conference centre and theatre, and an after-dark scene of rooftop bars, lounges, clubs, and even casinos that gives Marrakech its reputation for nightlife. When travellers want polish and pampering with the old city on the doorstep, this is my go-to.

What I like about Hivernage is the location-comfort balance. You're a short, flat walk or a five-minute taxi from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks, so the medina's magic is genuinely on tap — but you come home to a proper hotel with a lift, a spa, a pool, and a driveway your car can use. For first-timers who want the romance of Marrakech without the medina's logistical quirks, or for couples who want to dress up and go out at night, Hivernage threads that needle better than anywhere else in the city.

It's also where Marrakech goes to play after dark. The rooftop bars here have some of the best sunset views in the city, the dinner-and-show venues are clustered nearby, and the clubs draw a glamorous, international crowd. I've planned plenty of celebration trips — big birthdays, hen weekends, anniversaries — around a Hivernage base precisely because you can have a sophisticated night out and walk or taxi back in minutes.

My one honest caveat is character. Hivernage is undeniably comfortable but it leans international rather than deeply Moroccan; the hotels can feel like polished five-stars you'd find in any sunny city, and you won't get the soul of a courtyard riad here. So I sometimes suggest splitting a stay — a riad night or two inside the walls for atmosphere, and Hivernage for the comfort, the spa, and the nightlife. Taken for what it is, though, it's one of the easiest and most enjoyable bases in Marrakech.
