Mawazine — Rhythms of the World — is one of the largest music festivals on the planet, held in Morocco’s capital Rabat each June. Over about ten days it stages global pop superstars, Arab legends and African headliners across multiple stages, drawing millions, with many concerts completely free.

Mawazine is the festival that surprises people. Held in Rabat, the calm, leafy capital, it is genuinely one of the biggest music festivals in the world by attendance — we are talking millions of festival-goers across the run. The name means “rhythms,” and the programming is enormous: international pop and hip-hop megastars on the OLM Souissi stage, beloved Arab and Egyptian artists on the Nahda stage, and African and Moroccan talent elsewhere.

It takes place every June, usually running for around ten days. A huge share of the concerts are free and open to the public, with paid tickets only for the headline international acts. That mix is what gives Mawazine its scale — ordinary Rabati families, students and travellers all pour into the open-air sites night after night.

Expect crowds, energy and a side of Morocco many visitors miss: cosmopolitan, music-loving, and proudly modern. Rabat itself rewards the trip with its Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and Chellah ruins by day. I steer first-timers toward one or two specific nights that match their taste rather than the whole run, because the city is busy and hotels fill up.

Worth planning around? If you want spectacle and a major-league lineup without the festival-camping grind, yes. Rabat is easy to reach by train from Casablanca, Marrakech or Fes, so you can slot a Mawazine night into a wider itinerary. Just book your room early and check the dates, which shift slightly each year.
