Jemaa el-Fna at dusk

Free to watch

Why go

As the sun drops, the square fills with orange-juice carts, snail-soup stalls, storytellers, Gnaoua musicians and acrobats. You do not have to buy a thing: find a low wall, sit and watch the whole theatre unfold.

Best time of day
From sunset into the evening
Good to know
Performers expect a small tip if you photograph them.

The Koutoubia gardens

Free

Why go

Beside the great minaret, the gardens are open, green and calm, with rose beds and orange trees and locals dozing in the shade: a free pocket of quiet two minutes from the crowds.

Good to know
The mosque itself is closed to non-Muslims; the gardens and the exterior are free.

The ochre ramparts on foot

Free

Why go

Follow the old city walls on foot. The stretch near Bab Agnaou and the Kasbah glows in late-afternoon light, and walking it stitches the city together in a way no taxi ride does.

Best time of day
Late afternoon, when the walls glow

The souks

Free to wander

Why go

The spice pyramids, the dyers' lane with hanks of wool drying overhead, the metalworkers hammering: a living museum you walk straight into, with nothing to pay unless you choose to buy.

Good to know
A firm, friendly "no thank you" keeps the wander free.

The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter

Free

Why go

The southern quarters feel a world away from the souk crush, full of ordinary daily life: children playing football, bread going to the communal oven, men drinking mint tea.

The Kasbah quarter and its mosque streets

Free

Why go

The streets around the Kasbah mosque reward slow, unhurried roaming, map roughly in hand and no agenda: one of the most genuine free experiences in the city.

Courtyards and doorways

Free to look

Why go

Many riads and monument entrances are lovely just to glance at from the street. Pop your head into a courtyard or two as you pass.

Two honest caveats. In the souks a stallholder may steer you somewhere or a self-appointed "guide" may attach himself: smile, say no thank you and keep walking. And the famous paid sights (the Majorelle Garden, the Secret Garden, the palaces) are worth their fees; they are simply not free, so they are not on this list.

After you ask for a quote

What your Marrakech quote contains

  • A day-by-day route, with the driving time between stops
  • Stays matched to your style (riads, kasbahs, desert camps or hotels), named so you can look them up
  • Which moments are private to you, and which are shared, such as a camp’s dining tent
  • An itemised quote: what is included and what is not
  • Who is planning your trip, and how to reach them on WhatsApp
  • Free, with no obligation to book

Every trip is private and priced to your dates, so there is no fixed price list. Ask, and the proposal shows the full cost before anything is booked.

Marrakech: good questions

Is Jemaa el-Fna free?

Yes. Walking the square and watching the musicians, storytellers and acrobats costs nothing. Performers expect a small tip if you photograph or film them, so agree before you raise the camera or shoot from a distance.

Are the Majorelle Garden and the Secret Garden free?

No. Both charge an entry fee, which is why they are not on this list. The Koutoubia gardens are a free green space in the centre.

How do I wander the souks without being steered into shops?

A firm, friendly "la, shukran" (no, thank you) and a steady walk are enough. Nobody is owed anything for directions you did not ask for. A private guide removes the question entirely if you would rather not deal with it.

Can non-Muslims go inside the Koutoubia Mosque?

No, the mosque itself is closed to non-Muslims. The minaret, the exterior and the gardens around it are free to see and walk.
