What to do in Marrakech at night

In the medina, out of town, and ways to wind down. Each idea says roughly when to go, a tip, and how we can arrange it privately.

Choose your evening

1 to 4

In the medina

  1. Lantern and brassware stalls in a Marrakech souk square, photographed on one of our trips

    01From around sunset until late

    Jemaa el-Fna after dark

As the light goes, the square fills with smoke from the food stalls, Gnawa drummers, storytellers, musicians and acrobats. It is the city’s nightly open-air theatre, and the busiest, loudest hours are usually the first few after dark.

Tip: Performers and anyone you photograph will expect a small tip, so carry coins and agree before you take a picture. At the stalls, check what is on your table before you eat.

  2. Illustrative scene: a rooftop dinner of couscous and tagine at sunset over Marrakech

02Book for sunset, then stay for dinner

A rooftop dinner over the square or the Koutoubia

Terraces above Jemaa el-Fna and around the Koutoubia gardens look down on the square as it lights up. It is the calmest way to watch the evening unfold, with the minaret and, on clear days, the Atlas behind.

Tip: The best tables go first: ask for a terrace table facing the square, and arrive before sunset.

  3. Brassware and lantern stalls in the Marrakech souk, photographed on one of our trips

    03Early evening, about 2 to 3 hours

A guided night walk in the medina

The souks change after dark: lantern shops glow, workshops close their shutters and the lanes empty out between pools of light. With a guide you see the quieter corners, hear their stories and never have to work out the way back.

Tip: Wear shoes with grip; the lanes are uneven and poorly lit in places.

  4. 04After dark, a short stroll from the square

The Koutoubia lit up at night

The 12th-century minaret is floodlit after sunset, and the gardens around it are a calmer place to walk than the square. Non-Muslims can see the mosque from the outside only.

Tip: Pair it with the square: the walk between the two takes a few minutes.

Out and about

  1. 05Late afternoon to late evening

Sunset dinner and stargazing in the Agafay desert

The Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills, not sand dunes, about an hour’s drive from the city (times vary with traffic and the camp you choose). Camps there serve dinner as the sun goes down, often with music, and the sky is far darker than in the city.

Tip: It gets cold after dark, even in spring and autumn: bring a warm layer.

  2. 06Around sunset, about an hour

A calèche ride around the ramparts at dusk

The horse-drawn carriages wait near the Koutoubia and loop along the old walls and the gardens as the stone turns red. It is an easy, gentle way to see the city’s edge.

Tip: Agree the route, the time and the fare with the driver before you set off.

  3. 07Later in the evening

Bars and clubs in Gueliz and Hivernage

Most of the city’s bars and clubs are in the new town, Gueliz and Hivernage, rather than in the medina, often in hotels and licensed venues. For where to go, see our Marrakech nightlife guide, and check a venue is open before you set out.

Tip: A pre-booked driver or a taxi from your riad is the simplest way back late at night.

  4. Illustrative scene: musicians playing for guests in a lantern-lit riad courtyard at night

08Evening, usually two to three hours

    A dinner show with music

Several restaurants and riads stage dinners with traditional music, and sometimes dance, in a lantern-lit courtyard. Styles and quality vary a lot, so it is worth choosing carefully.

Tip: Ask what kind of music is on that night: Andalusian, Gnawa and popular styles make very different evenings.

Wind down

  1. Illustrative scene: a hammam ritual with rhassoul clay, rose petals and brass bowls

09Late afternoon or evening, 1 to 2 hours

    An evening hammam

A steam, a black-soap scrub and a rest with mint tea is the most Moroccan way to end a hot day of walking. Many riads and spas take evening bookings.

Tip: Book ahead in high season, and say if you prefer a female or male attendant.

  2. Illustrative scene: two couples and a chef preparing a tagine at a riad table

    10Afternoon into evening

A cooking class that ends in dinner

Some classes start with a market visit and finish with the meal you have cooked, eaten together at the table. It turns dinner into the evening’s activity.

Tip: Mention dietary needs when you book; most classes can adapt the menu.

  3. 11Any time after dinner

Mint tea in a late café

A glass of sweet mint tea on a café terrace, watching the street go by, is how many locals spend the evening. It is the gentlest end to a busy day.

Tip: Cafés around the square stay busy late; in the medina lanes, things quieten earlier.

  4. 12Whenever you call it a night

    Getting back safely

The medina is generally busy and fine to walk in the evening, but the lanes are a maze and quieter late at night. Plan how you will get back before you go out.

Tip: See the checklist below, or ask us for a driver for the evening.

Planned for you

Evenings we arrange

  • A private night walk in the medina

Your own guide through the lantern souks and quiet lanes after dark, ending at the square or back at your riad.

  • Agafay sunset dinner with a transfer

A private driver out to a desert camp for sunset and dinner, and back to your door afterwards.

  • Rooftop dinner and a hammam

An evening hammam, then a terrace table over the medina: booked and timed for you.

Want a real night in the dunes? The Agafay is a stony desert near the city; the tall sand dunes are in the Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga (pictured), a two-day road trip from Marrakech.

Getting back

Safety and transport at night

  • Walk back with your guide, or ask your riad to send someone to meet you at a landmark; many riads do.
  • Petit taxis should run on the meter; if a driver will not use it, agree the fare before you get in.
  • Keep a photo of your riad’s address and the nearest landmark to show a driver.
  • Carry small notes and coins for tips and taxis, and keep your phone out of reach in crowds.
  • Decline offers of “help” finding the way, firmly and politely; a pre-arranged guide avoids this altogether.
  • Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, mostly hotels, bars and some restaurants; drinking in public is not allowed.

Marrakech at night: your questions

Is Marrakech safe at night?

Generally yes in the busy areas: Jemaa el-Fna and the main medina lanes are lively well into the evening. As in any big city, watch your bag in crowds, keep to lit and busy lanes late at night, and plan how you will get back to your riad. A guide or a pre-booked driver removes most of the worry.

What time is Jemaa el-Fna busiest?

Usually in the first few hours after sunset, when the food stalls are set up and the musicians and storytellers draw crowds. Exact hours change with the season and during Ramadan.

What should I wear in the evening in Marrakech?

Modest, comfortable clothes are best in the medina, with shoulders and knees covered. Bring a light layer: evenings can be cool, and cold in winter and in the desert. Shoes with grip help on the uneven lanes.

Can you drink alcohol in Marrakech at night?

Yes, in licensed venues: many hotels, bars and some restaurants serve alcohol, mostly in Gueliz and Hivernage rather than in the medina. Drinking in public is not allowed.

How do I get around Marrakech at night?

Petit taxis are easy to find; insist on the meter or agree the fare first. Inside the medina you walk, so a guide or a riad escort helps late at night. For dinners outside the city, such as in the Agafay, a private driver is the simplest option.
