What Marrakech is like in January

January is the quietest month in the Red City. The holiday rush ends after the first week and the medina settles into its deepest calm — you can wander the Bahia Palace or the souks without the spring crowds, and riads drop to their lowest rates of the year. Days are mild at around 18°C under mostly blue skies, but evenings turn genuinely cold, so a warm layer for rooftop dinners and early starts is essential.

The light is the season's reward: low, sharp and golden, with the snow-dusted High Atlas standing clear on the horizon behind the Koutoubia. It is the best month to photograph Jemaa el-Fnaa without a wall of tour groups, and to linger over mint tea in a sunlit courtyard. Rain is occasional rather than relentless — usually a short morning shower that clears by midday — so most sightseeing days run uninterrupted.

January suits travellers who prize atmosphere and value over warmth. Pair the city with a day in the Atlas foothills, where Oukaimeden is in full ski season just two hours away, or push on to the Sahara, where daytime desert temperatures are comfortable and winter skies make stargazing exceptional. Beach plans aside, almost everything the city is known for is open, uncrowded and cheaper than at any other point in the calendar.

    Marrakech in January: your questions

Is January a good time to visit Marrakech?+
Yes, if you value calm and low prices over warmth. January is the quietest, cheapest month in Marrakech, with mild daytime weather around 18°C and crowd-free medina sightseeing. It is ideal for photographers, budget travellers and anyone who prefers an authentic, unhurried city. Just pack for cold evenings.
How hot is Marrakech in January?+
Marrakech in January sees daytime highs of around 18°C and night-time lows near 6°C. Days are mild and pleasant for walking in a light jacket, but evenings turn cold and rooftop dinners need a warm layer. The nearby High Atlas is far colder, with snow on the peaks.
Is it rainy in Marrakech in January?+
January is one of Marrakech's wetter months, but rain is still modest — around 5–6 rainy days, usually short morning showers that clear by midday. The city stays dry far more often than not, so most sightseeing runs uninterrupted. A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is enough.
What should I pack for Marrakech in January?+
Pack a warm jacket, layers you can add and shed across the 12°C day-to-night swing, comfortable walking shoes and a light rain jacket. Add warm layers for cold evenings and rooftop dinners, plus sunglasses for the sharp low winter sun. If you head to the Atlas or Sahara, bring thermals.
