What Marrakech is like in December

December makes Marrakech one of Europe's nearest winter-sun escapes. Daytime highs around 19°C are mild and pleasant for sightseeing under bright skies, even as evenings turn properly cold and the High Atlas behind the city wears a thick cap of snow. Outside the festive fortnight the city is calm and good value; the medina, the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa can be enjoyed at an unhurried winter pace, mint tea and a sunlit courtyard never far away.

Good to know

Marrakech in December: your questions

Is December a good time to visit Marrakech?+
Yes — December is one of Europe's nearest winter-sun escapes, with mild days around 19°C and snow on the nearby Atlas. Outside Christmas and New Year it is calm and good value. The festive fortnight is very busy and pricey, so book ahead or choose early or mid-December.
How hot is Marrakech in December?+
Marrakech in December has daytime highs of around 19°C and night-time lows near 7°C. Days are mild and bright for sightseeing in a light jacket, but evenings turn properly cold. The High Atlas behind the city is snow-covered and far colder.
Is it rainy in Marrakech in December?+
December sees around 5 rainy days, with cooler conditions and brighter dry spells between showers. Rain is usually brief and the city stays dry more often than not. A light rain jacket or compact umbrella covers the occasional wet morning.
What should I pack for Marrakech in December?+
Pack a warm jacket for cold evenings, layers for mild days and cold nights, a light rain jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. For a desert or Atlas trip, add thermals — both are cold at night, and the high mountains may be under snow.

  • The contrasts are the appeal. You can spend a crisp morning in the snow-dusted Atlas or skiing at Oukaimeden, then be back in a warm Marrakech courtyard by evening. The desert is comfortable by day and cold but clear by night, with excellent stargazing. Rain is occasional rather than constant, and the low winter sun gives the city a sharp, photogenic light — particularly fine across the gardens and the Koutoubia at dusk.

The exception is the Christmas–New Year window, when Marrakech books up and prices climb sharply: riads fill, the square buzzes, and demand peaks. Either embrace the festive energy and book well ahead, or come in the quieter early or mid-December stretches for mild days, low prices and a peaceful medina. For a mild-weather city break with snow within reach, December is a rewarding choice.
