Best Sunset Spots in Morocco

The best sunsets in Morocco are on the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, the Agafay desert outside Marrakech, the Marrakech rooftops over Jemaa el-Fna, the Atlantic ramparts of Essaouira and Asilah, Ait Benhaddou in late light, and Chefchaouen's Spanish Mosque. Here are nine, with when to go and how to fit each into a private trip.

Nine places, one golden hour

Where to watch the sun go down

From the Sahara to the Atlantic, in the order most private routes reach them. Want the short version? Read our short answer.

Pick an area

  • A camel caravan on a dune ridge at sunset in Erg Chebbi, photographed on one of our trips1

    Merzouga, the Sahara

    Erg Chebbi dunes

The tallest dunes in Morocco turn orange, then copper, then rose as the sun drops behind the ridges, and the shadows between them grow long and deep blue.

When to go and a local tip

When: The cooler months, roughly October to April, are the most comfortable; in summer the heat lasts well into the evening.

Tip: Climb a ridge a little before sunset and stay until the colour has gone from the sky. Sand holds heat, so bring a layer for after dark.

We time the camel ride so you reach the dunes for the last light, then continue to your camp for dinner under the stars.

  • Agafay desert
    2

    Near Marrakech

    Agafay desert

A stony desert of bare hills, not sand dunes, with the High Atlas on the horizon. At sunset the hills go gold and the mountains catch the last light.

When to go and a local tip

When: Good most of the year as an evening out from Marrakech; spring and autumn are the most pleasant.

Tip: Set your expectations: Agafay is rocky, not the Sahara. Its strength is that it is close enough to Marrakech for a sunset and dinner the same evening.

A private transfer out for the sunset, dinner at a desert camp and the drive back to your riad, with no group schedule.

  • Towers of the Ait Benhaddou ksar in warm light, photographed on one of our trips3

    Near Ouarzazate

    Ait Benhaddou

The earth-built ksar glows red-gold in late light, and the view across the riverbed shows the whole hillside of towers at once.

When to go and a local tip

When: Any season. Late afternoon is softer and usually quieter than the middle of the day, when day-trip groups arrive.

Tip: Walk up to the granary at the top for the view, and allow time to come back down before dark: the lanes are uneven.

On a private route over the Atlas we can stop here late in the day and stay nearby, so you see it in the evening light rather than at noon.

  • Illustrative scene: a High Atlas mountain village beside a winding road with snow-capped peaks4

    Between Marrakech and Ouarzazate

The High Atlas from the Tizi n’Tichka road

Long views across folded mountains and valley villages; in low light the ridges stack up in layers of colour.

When to go and a local tip

When: Clearest in spring and autumn. In winter the pass can have snow, so timing depends on the weather.

Tip: The road is winding; stop at a safe pull-out rather than looking from the car, and don’t plan to drive the pass after dark.

Your driver picks the viewpoint stops and the timing, so the drive becomes part of the day rather than a transfer.

  • Illustrative scene: a rooftop terrace with mint tea and the Koutoubia minaret at sunset5

    Marrakech

    Marrakech rooftops over Jemaa el-Fna

From a terrace above the square you watch the smoke of the food stalls rise as the sky turns pink behind the Koutoubia minaret, and the call to prayer carries across the rooftops.

When to go and a local tip

When: All year. In summer the evening is the only comfortable time to be out.

Tip: The cafés around the square fill up near sunset; arrive early for a table at the edge. You will usually be expected to order a drink.

We can end a guided medina day on a terrace at sunset and book dinner nearby.

  • Chefchaouen from the Spanish Mosque
    6

    Chefchaouen, the Rif

    Chefchaouen from the Spanish Mosque

The hilltop mosque above the town looks down over the blue medina and the Rif mountains; the white and blue walls soften as the light goes.

When to go and a local tip

When: Spring and autumn are mild; winter evenings in the mountains are cold.

Tip: It is an uphill walk of roughly half an hour from the medina on a rough path; wear good shoes and bring a light for the way down.

Stay the night in Chefchaouen rather than visiting on a day trip, so the sunset walk is easy.

  • Illustrative scene: the ramparts of Essaouira and blue fishing boats7

    Essaouira, the Atlantic

    Essaouira ramparts and the Skala

The sun sets straight into the Atlantic beyond the old sea bastions, with the cannons of the Skala and the fishing port in the foreground.

When to go and a local tip

When: All year; the coast stays mild. The wind is often strong, especially in summer.

Tip: Bring a jacket for the wind, and walk the ramparts and the port before the light goes.

An overnight in Essaouira lets you stay for the sunset instead of driving back to Marrakech in the evening.

    Essaouira guide
  • Illustrative scene: a whitewashed Atlantic medina and ramparts in the style of Asilah8

    Asilah, the north Atlantic coast

    Asilah ramparts and jetty

The whitewashed town sits on Portuguese-era ramparts above the ocean; from the bastion and the jetty the sun drops straight into the sea.

When to go and a local tip

When: Spring to autumn are best; summer is the busiest season in town.

Tip: The bastion at the edge of the medina and the jetty by the port are the classic viewpoints; both are short walks inside town.

Easy to add between Tangier and Chefchaouen or Rabat on a private northern route.

  • Legzira beach
    9

South of Agadir, near Sidi Ifni

    Legzira beach

Red rock formations stand on a long beach, and they glow in the evening light against the ocean.

When to go and a local tip

When: Best at low tide, which changes every day; check the tide times before you go.

Tip: One of the famous arches collapsed in 2016, so check the current state of the arches locally and keep clear of the cliffs and the rising tide.

A private day from Agadir, paired with the coast road and the souks of Tiznit.

Three routes built around the light

  • 2–4 days

Marrakech and an Agafay sunset dinner

A few days in Marrakech with a rooftop sunset over Jemaa el-Fna, then an evening out to the Agafay desert for the last light and dinner.

  • 5–7 days

Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou and the Sahara

Over the Atlas with viewpoint stops, a late-afternoon stop at Ait Benhaddou, then the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset from your camp.

  • 5–7 days

    Tangier, Asilah and Chefchaouen

The north: a sunset from the Asilah ramparts, then a night in Chefchaouen with the walk up to the Spanish Mosque.

Or start from our Sahara journeys and design your own.

Sunsets in Morocco: your questions

Where is the best sunset in Morocco?

For most travellers it is the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, where the sand changes colour as the sun goes down. Close runners-up are the Marrakech rooftops over Jemaa el-Fna, the Atlantic ramparts of Essaouira and Asilah, and Ait Benhaddou in late light.

Can I see a desert sunset on a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, in the Agafay desert, about an hour or less from the city depending on where you start. It is a stony desert rather than sand dunes, but the hills and the Atlas views are beautiful at sunset and you can be back in Marrakech the same night. For dunes you need to go to Merzouga or Zagora, which takes at least two days.

What is the best time of year for sunsets in Morocco?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable almost everywhere. Winter sunsets in the desert are clear but the evenings are cold, and summer evenings inland stay very hot. On the coast, sunsets are good all year, though the wind can be strong.

Are the Legzira arches still standing?

One of the best-known arches collapsed in 2016. The beach and its red rock formations are still worth a visit at low tide, but check the current state of the arches locally and keep away from the cliff edges.

Can you plan a private trip around sunsets?

Yes. On a private trip your driver and guide set the day around the light: a late stop at Ait Benhaddou, a camel ride timed for the dunes at sunset, or a night in Chefchaouen or Essaouira so you are there for the evening. Tell us which places you want and we send a plan within 24 hours.
