Serenity Morocco

Merzouga tours are private trips to the edge of Erg Chebbi — Morocco's tallest dune field, with sand rising to around 150 metres — for a sunset camel trek into the dunes, a night in a luxury desert camp under one of the darkest skies on Earth, and a sunrise over the sand. Merzouga is reached in roughly 9–10 hours from Marrakech or 7–8 hours from Fes, usually split over two days.

When people imagine the Moroccan Sahara — towering orange-gold dunes, an unbroken horizon, profound silence — they are picturing Erg Chebbi, and Merzouga is the village at its edge. These are the tallest dunes in Morocco, with sand rising to around 150 metres from the flat hammada plain. A paved road runs right to the sand, which is why Merzouga has the widest choice of luxury camps in the country and is the natural pick for first-time desert travellers and families.
The signature experience is the camel trek. You mount a dromedary at the dune edge in late afternoon and ride, usually about an hour to an hour and a half, into the sand sea to your camp, arriving in time for sunset. No experience is needed; reputable operators cap loads at around 150 kg per animal for the camels' welfare. The next morning, a pre-dawn climb up the nearest dune rewards you with the sand shifting from grey to pink to blazing copper — the moment most travellers remember above all others.
After dark, Merzouga reveals its other claim to fame. The desert around Erg Chebbi sits at roughly Bortle Class 1 to 2, the darkest end of the dark-sky scale, with the dry air, open horizon and more than 300 clear nights a year that astronomers look for. Under skies this dark the full arc of the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and several camps run astronomy sessions with telescopes. From Marrakech the journey is around 9–10 hours over the High Atlas and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, so we recommend splitting it over two days; from Fes it is around 7–8 hours via the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley.
