Merzouga Tours at the Edge of the Sand

Merzouga tours are private trips to the edge of Erg Chebbi — Morocco's tallest dune field, with sand rising to around 150 metres — for a sunset camel trek into the dunes, a night in a luxury desert camp under one of the darkest skies on Earth, and a sunrise over the sand. Merzouga is reached in roughly 9–10 hours from Marrakech or 7–8 hours from Fes, usually split over two days.

Why Merzouga Is the Sahara Most Travellers Picture

When people imagine the Moroccan Sahara — towering orange-gold dunes, an unbroken horizon, profound silence — they are picturing Erg Chebbi, and Merzouga is the village at its edge. These are the tallest dunes in Morocco, with sand rising to around 150 metres from the flat hammada plain. A paved road runs right to the sand, which is why Merzouga has the widest choice of luxury camps in the country and is the natural pick for first-time desert travellers and families.

The signature experience is the camel trek. You mount a dromedary at the dune edge in late afternoon and ride, usually about an hour to an hour and a half, into the sand sea to your camp, arriving in time for sunset. No experience is needed; reputable operators cap loads at around 150 kg per animal for the camels' welfare. The next morning, a pre-dawn climb up the nearest dune rewards you with the sand shifting from grey to pink to blazing copper — the moment most travellers remember above all others.

After dark, Merzouga reveals its other claim to fame. The desert around Erg Chebbi sits at roughly Bortle Class 1 to 2, the darkest end of the dark-sky scale, with the dry air, open horizon and more than 300 clear nights a year that astronomers look for. Under skies this dark the full arc of the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and several camps run astronomy sessions with telescopes. From Marrakech the journey is around 9–10 hours over the High Atlas and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, so we recommend splitting it over two days; from Fes it is around 7–8 hours via the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley.

Erg Chebbi has two seasons that matter: the comfortable window of October to April, and the extreme heat of May to September. Nighttime figures refer to the open desert; camp interiors are warmer. Drive times are planning estimates — confirm current road conditions before you lock in dates.

Questions, Answered

Merzouga tours — frequently asked.

How do I get to Merzouga?+
Merzouga sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeast Morocco. From Marrakech it is around 560 km — roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving — so nearly all tours split the journey over two days, crossing the High Atlas and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. From Fes the drive is shorter at around 7 to 8 hours via the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley. Ouarzazate is the closest major town, around 5 to 6 hours away. Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you travel.
How many days do I need for a Merzouga desert tour?+
From Marrakech, three days is the realistic minimum to reach Erg Chebbi, sleep in the Sahara, and return without spending the whole trip in a vehicle. From Fes or Ouarzazate, a two-day tour can work because the drive is shorter. Four days or more buys a far more relaxed, scenic pace with two nights at a camp. If you only have two days and are starting from Marrakech, you would reach the smaller Zagora dunes rather than Erg Chebbi.
What is the camel trek at Merzouga like?+
Camel trekking means riding a dromedary in a small caravan across the dunes, usually about 1 to 1.5 hours from the dune edge to your desert camp. Treks run at sunset or sunrise and need no prior experience. Reputable operators, ourselves included, cap loads at around 150 kg per animal for the camels' welfare. If you would prefer not to ride, most camps can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the same camp instead.
Is Merzouga good for stargazing?+
Exceptionally so. The desert around Merzouga and Erg Chebbi sits at roughly Bortle Class 1 to 2 — the darkest end of the dark-sky scale — with very dry air, an open horizon in every direction, and more than 300 clear nights a year. Under skies this dark you can see the full arc of the Milky Way with the naked eye, along with bright planets and major meteor showers. Several camps and specialist guides near Merzouga run astronomy sessions with telescopes. The galactic core is visible from roughly April through October.
What is the difference between Merzouga and Erg Chigaga?+
Merzouga sits at Erg Chebbi, Morocco's tallest and most famous dune field (sand to around 150 metres), reached by paved road with the widest choice of luxury camps — the pick for first-timers and families. Erg Chigaga near M'hamid is remoter and quieter, reached only by 4x4 across roughly 1.5 to 2 hours of off-road piste, with fewer camps and far fewer visitors. Erg Chebbi has the tallest dunes and best access; Erg Chigaga offers the greatest solitude.
What is the best time to visit Merzouga?+
The best months are October, November, March and April, when daytime temperatures sit comfortably and nights are cool but manageable. December to February is pleasant by day but cold at night, dropping close to freezing in the open desert — luxury camps provide heating and thick blankets. Avoid June through August, when daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius. Confirm current conditions before you lock in dates.
What should I pack for a night in the Merzouga desert?+
Pack for big temperature swings: the desert can be warm by day and drop sharply, even close to freezing on winter nights in the open Sahara. Bring layers — a warm jacket or fleece for the evening even in shoulder season — along with sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen) and closed shoes plus sandals for the sand. A scarf is genuinely useful against wind-blown sand on the camel trek. Camps provide bedding and blankets, but a small torch or head-lamp and a power bank are worth having, as electricity at camps can be limited.
Is a Merzouga desert tour suitable for families with children?+
Yes — Merzouga is the natural pick for families. Because a paved road runs right to the edge of Erg Chebbi, it is far easier to reach than the remote Erg Chigaga, and it has the widest choice of comfortable luxury camps in the country. The sunset camel trek needs no experience and is a highlight for children, and if a child would rather not ride, most camps can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the same camp instead. Sandboarding, the dunes and the stargazing all appeal to younger travellers. From Marrakech, we recommend splitting the long drive over two days so it stays comfortable for kids.
