Tinghir (also written Tinerhir) sits at around 1,340 metres in the Draa-Tafilalet region, where the river of the same name descends from the High Atlas and fans out into one of Morocco's most lush palm oases before the desert takes over. The town is best known as the base for Todra Gorge — the towering limestone canyon a short drive to the north — but Tinghir itself repays more than a passing stop. The old medina, the Glaoui Kasbah overlooking the oasis, the weekly souk, and the long shaded walk through the palm groves are the ingredients of a quietly rewarding half-day. Positioned on the main road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, Tinghir is both a logical overnight on the southern desert route and a destination with its own modest, unhurried character.

#1. Todra Gorge — 15 Minutes Away
Tinghir's most famous neighbour is Todra Gorge, which begins around 15–20 minutes north of the town along the R703 road. The gorge is where the Todra River has sliced through the limestone of the High Atlas over a very long time, creating a narrow slot with walls rising roughly 300 metres — sometimes closing to just 10 metres apart. Even if you are only stopping in Tinghir for a night, the gorge is worth making time for. The canyon is at its most dramatic in mid-morning light, before the narrow section falls into shadow, and the tour buses tend to arrive later in the day — another reason to go early. Our full Todra Gorge guide covers the best viewing spots, the walk upstream, and the climbing routes on the canyon walls.
#2. The Tinghir Palm Oasis
The town spreads across a broad river-terrace, and the palm oasis extends along both sides of the Todra River for a considerable distance toward the mouth of the gorge. A walk into the oasis is Tinghir's closest equivalent to a local signature experience: traditional irrigation channels (seguia) distribute water through a dense canopy of date palms, fig trees and vegetable plots, with occasional earthen walls and old granary ruins. The air cools noticeably under the canopy, and the route rewards slow walking. Some guesthouses and small hire shops in town rent bicycles at around 100 MAD a day (confirm current prices locally), which lets you cover more ground at a relaxed pace.
#3. The Glaoui Kasbah and Old Medina
The hillside above the oasis is dominated by the Glaoui Kasbah, a fortified residence built by the Glaoui family who controlled much of southern Morocco in the first half of the 20th century. The exterior is striking from below — earthen towers catching the warm light above the palm canopy. Check locally whether guided interior access is available, as this varies. Around the kasbah, the old medina and the Aït el Haj Ali district (historically the town's Jewish quarter, or mellah) preserve a quieter texture than the newer commercial streets. The worn doorways and remaining plasterwork are worth pausing over, and the lanes reward wandering without a fixed itinerary.
#4. Place Principale and the Weekly Souk
Tinghir's commercial heart is a wide central square lined with cafés, boulangeries and the southern-Morocco mix of hardware, spice and textile stalls. It is a good place for a mint tea and an hour of watching the town move at its own pace. On souk day — typically Tuesday in Tinghir, though confirm locally before planning around it — the square expands into a weekly market where surrounding villages bring produce, livestock and goods. This is a more local and unhurried market than the tourist-pitched souks of Marrakech or Fes, and all the more interesting for it.
#5. Day Trips from Tinghir
Tinghir's position on the southern road makes it a natural base for the wider region:
- Todra Gorge and upper valley: the obvious day out, 15–20 minutes by road. Our Todra Gorge vs Dades Gorge comparison helps you decide how to split your time between the two.
- Dades Valley and Gorge: roughly 45 minutes to an hour west, the Dades River has carved its own dramatic gorge above a valley lined with kasbahs and earthen villages. Our Dades Valley guide covers the route and what to see.
- Draa Valley and the southern palmeraie: an hour or more south, the long Draa River valley is lined with palms and ksour (fortified villages). See our Draa Valley guide for the character and highlights.
- Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: continuing east along the southern road, the route eventually reaches the great dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — a full day's drive but the goal of many desert circuits. Our Merzouga travel guide explains what to expect at the dunes.
#How Long to Spend in Tinghir
Most travellers staying at the gorge or on the southern road spend one night in or near Tinghir, using it as a base between Ouarzazate and Merzouga. If you're on a Morocco south loop road trip, a relaxed day — oasis walk in the morning, gorge in the afternoon, souk browsing — is a natural pause before pushing further east. Those with an extra day can go deeper into the Dades Valley or take a guided walk from the gorge into the upper canyon.
#Practical Tips
- Go early to Todra Gorge. The morning light reaches the canyon floor best, and the narrow slot is at its quietest before the tour groups arrive.
- Summer is very hot. Temperatures in the Tinghir valley can typically exceed 40°C (around 104°F) in July and August. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months by far.
- Cash matters. Smaller guesthouses and market stalls work in dirham cash; the main town square has ATMs, but carry backup cash on the southern road.
- Altitude note. At around 1,340 m, Tinghir is noticeably cooler than the arid plains and erg further south — pack a layer for evenings.
- Drive time from Marrakech. The journey is roughly 7 to 8 hours by private car (around 350–360 km) via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Ouarzazate. Confirm road conditions in winter, when snow on the pass can add significant time.
