The best half-days are the ones within about an hour: the Agafay desert (45 min) for a sunset camel ride, the Ourika Valley (1 hour) for riverside Berber villages, a Palmeraie camel or quad ride (20 min), and the Menara/Majorelle gardens in town. All let you be back in Marrakech by evening.

Not every excursion needs a full day, and Marrakech is well set up for half-days because several genuinely good experiences sit within an hour of the city. When clients have just an afternoon free, these are the ones I steer them to.

Agafay desert is my top half-day. Forty-five minutes out, it gives you rolling stone-desert scenery, a sunset camel or quad ride, and even a star dinner if you stretch it into the evening — maximum drama for minimal time. The Ourika Valley is the other strong option: an hour south into the green Atlas foothills for a riverside lunch and a Berber village or argan cooperative visit, easily done in an afternoon if you don't push all the way to the Setti Fatma falls.

Closer still, the Palmeraie — Marrakech's palm grove on the city's edge, about 20 minutes out — is a quick, easy camel ride or quad-bike spin, popular with families and great for a short golden-hour outing. And you don't even need to leave town: the Majorelle Garden, the Menara olive-grove pavilion and the Secret Garden in the medina are all 'half-day' experiences in themselves, calm green escapes from the souk bustle.

My advice for choosing: if you want a change of landscape, go Agafay (desert) or Ourika (mountains); if you want something quick and fun with kids or limited time, do the Palmeraie or a garden. All of these get you comfortably back in the medina for dinner, which is the whole point of a half-day — a real taste of beyond-the-city without losing your evening.
