Imlil Tours in the Toubkal Foothills

Imlil tours are private trips to the High Atlas village that serves as Morocco's mountain trailhead — a cluster of flat-roofed Berber houses, walnut groves and terraced fields at roughly 1,740 metres, about 1.5 hours south of Marrakech. From here paths lead up to Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, but Imlil rewards day-hikers and culture travellers just as much as summit-bound trekkers.

Why Imlil Is the Trailhead of Moroccan Mountain Travel

Ninety minutes south of Marrakech's pink ramparts, the road climbs out of the Haouz plain, threads through the Asni valley and dead-ends in a mountain amphitheatre of walnut groves, terraced fields and flat-roofed Berber houses stacked up the slopes. This is Imlil — a village of mule bells and apple orchards sitting at roughly 1,740 metres (about 5,700 feet) in the High Atlas, and the undisputed trailhead of Moroccan mountain travel. The air matters as much as the views: at this altitude Imlil runs considerably cooler than Marrakech, so in summer, when the city bakes, the village is fresh, and in winter you can expect genuine cold and snow-dusted peaks above.

From here, paths lead up to Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa — but you don't need summit ambitions to fall for Imlil. The classic short walk is a gentle 45 to 60 minute climb to Aremd, the largest village in the valley, perched above a wide floodplain on the main Toubkal route: walk up through the walnut groves, take tea on a terrace facing the peaks, and loop back for an easy, rewarding half-day with constant views. Lunch on the terrace at the Kasbah du Toubkal, a hike to a nearby waterfall, and mint tea in a village home round out the village's gentler pleasures.

For trekkers, Imlil is basecamp for one of the great non-technical high-altitude walks anywhere. From the village a fit walker with no technical climbing experience can stand on the summit of Toubkal inside two days — up to the refuge at around 3,207 metres on day one, a pre-dawn push to the top on day two, then back down. In summer the route needs no ropes or crampons; in deep winter it becomes a snow climb requiring crampons, an ice axe and stiff mountaineering boots. Either way, it sits barely 90 minutes by road from the souks of Marrakech, which is what makes Imlil so extraordinary: true mountain wilderness within reach of the city.

Plan a October trip

Imlil works year-round, but the season shapes what is possible: April–May and September–October are best for both day hikes and the Toubkal summit. From roughly December to March the high peaks carry snow, so the summit becomes a winter climb needing crampons, an ice axe and a mountain guide. Conditions change fast in the mountains — confirm current weather and trail status before you set out.

Questions, Answered

Imlil tours — frequently asked.

How do I get to Imlil from Marrakech?+
Imlil lies roughly 60 to 65 km south of Marrakech and takes about 1.5 hours by private car. The road climbs out of the Haouz plain, threads through the Asni valley and dead-ends in the village, which sits at around 1,740 metres in the High Atlas. Most travellers come on a private driver-guided tour, either as a day trip or as the start of a longer mountain trek. The drive itself is scenic, with roadside viewpoints and the option to stop at the Asni souk on a Tuesday. Drive times are planning estimates — confirm current road conditions, especially in winter when snow can affect the higher stretches.
Do I need to be fit or experienced to visit Imlil?+
Not at all for the village itself. Imlil rewards day-hikers and culture travellers as much as serious trekkers: the classic short walk to Aremd is a gentle 45 to 60 minute climb through walnut groves, and you can simply take tea on a terrace facing the peaks. Summiting Mount Toubkal is a different matter — it needs good cardiovascular fitness and comfort on long uphill days at altitude — but it requires no technical climbing experience in summer. We match the route to your ability, from an easy half-day stroll to the full two-day climb.
Can I climb Mount Toubkal from Imlil?+
Yes — Imlil is the basecamp for Toubkal, at roughly 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa. The classic route is a two-day out-and-back: you trek up to the Toubkal refuge at around 3,207 metres on the first day, make a pre-dawn push to the summit on the second, then descend back to Imlil. In summer (roughly April to October) it is a non-technical trek for fit walkers. In deep winter it becomes a snow climb requiring crampons, an ice axe and stiff mountaineering boots, and should only be attempted with an experienced mountain guide.
What is the best time of year to visit Imlil?+
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the sweet spots, with warm days, clear air and largely snow-free trails for both day hikes and the Toubkal summit. Summer is a cool, welcome escape from the heat of Marrakech — the village stays fresh while the city bakes. Winter brings genuine cold and snow above the village: beautiful for snow-walking in the valleys, but the high peaks become a technical winter climb. Conditions change quickly in the mountains, so confirm the current weather before you go.
What can I do in Imlil on a day trip?+
A day trip from Marrakech easily covers the scenic drive, a gentle walk to Aremd through the walnut groves, lunch or mint tea on a terrace facing the High Atlas — the Kasbah du Toubkal terrace is a highlight — and a glimpse of Berber mountain life among the terraced fields and mule trails. If you want a little more, you can add a short waterfall hike. It is the classic cool-air antidote to the medina, and on a private tour the pace is entirely yours.
How high is Imlil and is altitude a concern?+
Imlil sits at approximately 1,740 metres (about 5,700 feet), high enough to feel noticeably cooler than Marrakech but low enough that altitude is not usually a concern for a village visit or a day hike. It becomes relevant on the Toubkal trek, which climbs to 4,167 metres — there, taking the ascent at a steady pace and spending a night at the refuge helps your body adjust. If you are sensitive to altitude, let us know and we will plan the trek with extra acclimatisation time.
What should I pack for Imlil?+
Even on a day trip, pack layers — Imlil runs cooler than Marrakech year-round, and the weather can shift quickly. Bring sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, as the mountain sun is strong), and a warm top for the terraces and higher trails. For the Toubkal trek you will need proper hiking gear, and in winter crampons, an ice axe and stiff mountaineering boots are essential. We send a full packing list once we know your route and season.
Is Imlil suitable for families?+
Yes — the village and the gentle walk to Aremd suit families well, with a manageable, scenic trail through orchards and the reward of tea on a terrace facing the peaks. The cool mountain air is a relief for children after the heat of the city, and the Berber villages and mule trails are a genuine adventure for younger travellers. The full Toubkal summit is demanding and better suited to fit teenagers and adults, but there is plenty in and around Imlil for all ages — we tailor the day to your group.
