Serenity Morocco

Imlil tours are private trips to the High Atlas village that serves as Morocco's mountain trailhead — a cluster of flat-roofed Berber houses, walnut groves and terraced fields at roughly 1,740 metres, about 1.5 hours south of Marrakech. From here paths lead up to Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, but Imlil rewards day-hikers and culture travellers just as much as summit-bound trekkers.

Ninety minutes south of Marrakech's pink ramparts, the road climbs out of the Haouz plain, threads through the Asni valley and dead-ends in a mountain amphitheatre of walnut groves, terraced fields and flat-roofed Berber houses stacked up the slopes. This is Imlil — a village of mule bells and apple orchards sitting at roughly 1,740 metres (about 5,700 feet) in the High Atlas, and the undisputed trailhead of Moroccan mountain travel. The air matters as much as the views: at this altitude Imlil runs considerably cooler than Marrakech, so in summer, when the city bakes, the village is fresh, and in winter you can expect genuine cold and snow-dusted peaks above.
From here, paths lead up to Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa — but you don't need summit ambitions to fall for Imlil. The classic short walk is a gentle 45 to 60 minute climb to Aremd, the largest village in the valley, perched above a wide floodplain on the main Toubkal route: walk up through the walnut groves, take tea on a terrace facing the peaks, and loop back for an easy, rewarding half-day with constant views. Lunch on the terrace at the Kasbah du Toubkal, a hike to a nearby waterfall, and mint tea in a village home round out the village's gentler pleasures.
For trekkers, Imlil is basecamp for one of the great non-technical high-altitude walks anywhere. From the village a fit walker with no technical climbing experience can stand on the summit of Toubkal inside two days — up to the refuge at around 3,207 metres on day one, a pre-dawn push to the top on day two, then back down. In summer the route needs no ropes or crampons; in deep winter it becomes a snow climb requiring crampons, an ice axe and stiff mountaineering boots. Either way, it sits barely 90 minutes by road from the souks of Marrakech, which is what makes Imlil so extraordinary: true mountain wilderness within reach of the city.

OctoberCrisp, golden autumn walking before the first snows return to the peaks.
Imlil works year-round, but the season shapes what is possible: April–May and September–October are best for both day hikes and the Toubkal summit. From roughly December to March the high peaks carry snow, so the summit becomes a winter climb needing crampons, an ice axe and a mountain guide. Conditions change fast in the mountains — confirm current weather and trail status before you set out.
