For the Moroccan coast overall, the best months are September and October: warm 22–24°C days, the calmest winds of the year in Essaouira, the warmest sea (around 20–22°C), thinner crowds and the start of prime surf. May is the strong spring alternative before summer’s wind and heat.

If I had to send a friend to the Moroccan coast in just one month and have it go right, I'd choose September — and October a very close second. These early-autumn months hit a remarkable balance: days are a warm, comfortable 22–24°C, the summer crowds have thinned, and crucially the sea is at its yearly warmest of around 20–22°C because the Atlantic spends all summer slowly heating up. It's the rare moment when everything the coast offers lines up at once.

Autumn also solves the coast's signature problem: wind. Essaouira, windy almost year-round, falls calmest in September and October, so you finally get gentle beach days in a town that usually blows hard. Down in Agadir the weather is glorious and the resorts quieter than peak summer, and up at Taghazout the first proper swells of the new surf season start to arrive. Wherever you base yourself, early autumn rewards you — it's my genuine all-round favourite for this stretch of Morocco.

The strong alternative is late spring, particularly May. The countryside is green, the air is a pleasant 22–24°C, and the coast feels fresh and uncrowded before the summer rush. The catch is that the sea is still cool (around 17–18°C) and the trade winds are building toward their summer peak, so May is wonderful for walking, food and atmosphere but less so for swimming or a still beach. It's the shoulder I reach for when autumn dates don't work.

I'd steer you away from peak July–August if your heart is set on calm and swimming — Agadir stays comfortable but Essaouira blows fiercely, and the coast is at its busiest. And midwinter, lovely as Agadir's sunshine is, means a cold sea everywhere. So my honest one-line answer for the coast overall: aim for late September into October for the best mix of warmth, calm, warm-ish sea and space, with May as the spring back-up.
