What is the best way to see Tangier's medina and kasbah on foot?

The short answer

Our team's answer

Start at the Grand Socco, enter the medina to the American Legation, cross the Petit Socco and climb to the kasbah at the top of the old town for views over the Strait of Gibraltar. It takes three to four hours with a museum stop. The lanes are steep in places, so wear good shoes.

Question

The full answer

A common question when planning a trip to Morocco, answered honestly by our travel designers.

Tangier's old town is small enough to see on foot in a morning or an afternoon, and its sights line up naturally from the newer city at the bottom to the kasbah at the top. The route below takes three to four hours with one museum visit and a café stop.

Begin at the Grand Socco, officially the Place du 9 Avril 1947, the round square that separates the medina from the newer town. It has a large fountain in the centre, palms and benches, and is a good meeting point. From here a gate leads into the medina.

Inside, turn towards the lower medina to the American Legation, the building that housed the United States mission from 1821 and is now a museum and cultural centre, with paintings of Morocco and a wing on the writer Paul Bowles; allow about an hour if you go in, and check locally for opening days. Then make your way to the Petit Socco, the small square at the heart of the medina. In the early 20th century the post offices of four nations stood around it, a reminder of Tangier's international past; its cafés are a good place to pause, and the Dar Niaba Museum opened nearby in 2022.

From the Petit Socco, climb through the lanes to the kasbah on the western hill, at the top of the old town. The way is steep in places, and the lanes twist, so an offline map or a guide helps. At the top, the kasbah opens onto views over the Strait of Gibraltar towards Spain on a clear day, and the cafés nearby are a classic place for mint tea above the sea.

The medina's crafts are leather, wood, silver, traditional clothing and Moroccan shoes, so you will pass workshops and small shops all along the way. Bargain politely and only for things you want. Unofficial guides may offer to help; agree on an official guide in advance if you want one.

Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and cooler lanes, wear comfortable shoes with grip, and dress modestly. If you arrive by ferry from Spain for the day, this route fits comfortably into the time you have in the city.
