Legally, most car-rental firms in Morocco accept a valid home licence plus passport, and police rarely demand more. But an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended — it removes any ambiguity at checkpoints and is sometimes required if your licence is not in Latin script.

Here is the honest version, because the internet over-complicates this. In practice, the major rental companies at Marrakech and Casablanca airports hand over the keys with nothing more than your home driving licence, your passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name. I've watched hundreds of clients do exactly that with a UK, US, EU, Canadian or Australian licence and drive off without a hitch.

That said, I always tell people to get the IDP anyway. It costs very little, takes ten minutes at a post office or motoring association back home, and it is essentially a multilingual translation of your licence — including Arabic and French, the two languages a Moroccan gendarme actually reads. If your home licence is not in Latin characters (for example a licence printed only in Chinese or Japanese script), an IDP stops being optional and becomes genuinely necessary.

Where the IDP earns its keep is at the roadside. Morocco has frequent gendarmerie checkpoints, and while officers are usually polite and wave tourists through, a clean stack of papers — passport, IDP, home licence, rental agreement, the car's grey card and insurance — ends every conversation in thirty seconds. Fumbling for a licence an officer can't read just prolongs things.

One nuance: the IDP is not a standalone document. It is only valid alongside your physical home licence, so carry both. And get the correct version (the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP is the one recognised in Morocco). If you're on a fly-drive trip, sort this before you leave home — you cannot obtain a meaningful IDP once you've landed.

Honestly, many of our guests skip the driving question entirely and take a private driver instead. If the whole point of the holiday is to gaze out at the Atlas or the Sahara rather than at the road, a chauffeur removes the paperwork, the parking and the checkpoint Spanish-inquisition in one stroke. But if you want the freedom of your own wheels, get the IDP and enjoy the drive.
