Yes, comfortably. Essaouira is about 2.5 hours' drive each way from Marrakech on a good, mostly flat road — so a full day there and back works well (roughly 5 hours' driving, 5–6 hours in town). It's one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips, though an overnight lets you enjoy the sunset.
Of all the longer day trips from Marrakech, Essaouira is the one that works best as a there-and-back, and I happily recommend it. The drive is about 2.5 hours each way on a smooth, largely straight road through argan country — far easier than the winding Atlas passes — so you can leave after breakfast, get a solid five or six hours in the town, and be back in Marrakech for a late dinner without feeling wrung out.
Essaouira itself is a joy: a breezy, walkable Atlantic port with whitewashed-and-blue ramparts, a relaxed UNESCO medina that's far gentler than Marrakech's, a working fishing harbour piled with the day's catch, and seafood grills right on the quay. The cool sea air is a tonic after the inland heat, and it's small enough to see properly in a day. Many people leave saying it was the most relaxing part of their trip.
The drive is also part of the experience — you pass argan groves (sometimes with goats famously up in the trees) and can stop at a women's argan-oil cooperative on the way. A common add-on is a stop near the beach for a camel or horse ride along the sand. None of it feels rushed at day-trip pace, which is exactly why this route is so popular.
My one honest caveat: doing it in a day means you miss Essaouira's golden-hour magic — the sunset over the ramparts and the gulls is special, and the town gets even more atmospheric in the evening once the day-trippers leave. So if your schedule allows even one night, I'd take it. But if a day is all you have, Essaouira and back is absolutely doable and absolutely worth it — comfortably the best long day trip from Marrakech.
