Marrakech to the coastal town of Essaouira is about 190 km and just 2.5–3 hours by road on a good, mostly flat highway. There is no train, but frequent Supratours buses and private drivers make it the easiest day trip or short break from Marrakech.
Essaouira is the easy one, and it is why so many people make it their first escape from Marrakech. The windswept Atlantic port is only about 190 kilometres away, and the drive takes a comfortable 2.5 to 3 hours on a well-maintained, mostly straight road across the Haouz plain. There are no mountains to cross, so it is gentle on anyone prone to car sickness — a relief after the Atlas roads.
The standout stop is the argan-oil country roughly an hour in, where you pass groves of argan trees — and yes, sometimes goats actually climbing them to eat the fruit. Most drivers pause at a women's argan cooperative where you can watch the oil being hand-pressed and buy it at source. It breaks the journey nicely and turns transport into a small experience. The landscape gradually shifts from red Marrakech earth to scrubby coastal plain as you near the ocean.
There is no train to Essaouira — the line doesn't reach the coast here — so your options are road only. Supratours runs frequent, cheap and reliable coaches from beside Marrakech's train station (book the same day, around 2.5 hours), shared grand taxis are quicker but cramped, and a private driver gives you door-to-door comfort with stops. Essaouira also has a small airport, but it is mainly seasonal European charters, not useful for getting there from Marrakech.
Because it is so close, Essaouira works either as a long day trip or, far better, an overnight or two. I always nudge guests toward staying the night — the medina at dusk, fresh grilled sardines on the port, and the famous Atlantic wind (a windsurfer's paradise) deserve more than a few rushed hours. Leave Marrakech mid-morning, lunch by the harbour, and you are wandering the ramparts by early afternoon with the whole evening ahead of you.
