Marrakech to Ouarzazate is about 200 km but takes roughly 4 hours by road because you cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. There is no train. The mountain drive itself, plus Ait Ben Haddou near Ouarzazate, is a highlight of any southern trip.

Ouarzazate — the "gateway to the desert" and Morocco's film capital — is only about 200 kilometres from Marrakech, but don't let that fool you: it takes around 4 hours by road, because every one of those kilometres goes over or through the High Atlas. The road climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, and the switchbacks, not the distance, are what set the pace.

The Tichka crossing is one of the great drives in Morocco, and honestly the journey is half the reason to go. You wind up through Berber villages clinging to the slopes, past dramatic valley views and roadside argan and walnut stalls, over the high pass (often dusted with snow in winter), then down the other side into the arid, reddish pre-Saharan landscape that signals you have left the green north behind. The road was fully upgraded in recent years, so it is smoother than it used to be, but it is still slow, twisty going — allow the full 4 hours and don't rush it.

There is no train to Ouarzazate and no useful passenger flights, so road is the only realistic way in. A private driver is the standard choice because you will want to stop — for photos at the pass, for the famous Ait Ben Haddou ksar (about 30 minutes before Ouarzazate, and a UNESCO site used in countless films), and for lunch in the mountains. The Supratours bus also runs the route but you lose all the stopping flexibility that makes this drive special.

Most travellers don't treat Ouarzazate as a destination in itself but as the first major stop on the road to Merzouga or the Draa Valley and Zagora. A common pattern is Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on day one (about 4 hours plus stops, arriving for a late lunch and the kasbahs), then onward east the next day. If you are prone to motion sickness, take a tablet before the Tichka section — it is genuinely winding — and grab the front seat.
