Yes — it's my pick for the best Atlas day trip. Imlil sits at 1,740m at the foot of Mount Toubkal, about 1.5 hours from Marrakech. You get real mountain villages, terraced valleys, a walkable trail or mule ride, and a Berber lunch with views. More authentic and rugged than Ourika.
If someone asks me for the single best mountain day trip from Marrakech, I say Imlil. It's about an hour and a half's drive south, climbing to 1,740m at the very foot of Mount Toubkal — North Africa's highest peak. Unlike the easy riverside Ourika, Imlil feels like proper mountain country: stone-and-mud villages, walnut groves, mules carrying loads up the trails, and snow on the peaks much of the year.
The classic day is a guided walk from Imlil up through the terraced fields to a village like Aroumd or Around, sometimes as far as the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch on the Toubkal trail, with a mule available if anyone tires. You stop for a tagine lunch on a terrace looking straight up at the high mountains. It's active without being a hardcore trek — most reasonably fit people manage the village walks comfortably.
Honest notes: it's higher and cooler than the city, so bring a warm layer even in summer, and in winter the upper trails carry snow and ice — go with a guide and the right footwear. The road up narrows and winds toward the end. And because you're in walking country, this trip rewards people who want to be on their feet; if you'd rather sit by a river and sip tea, Ourika suits you better.
Verdict: absolutely worth it, and the one I'd choose for an authentic, scenic Atlas day. For those who fall in love with it — and many do — Imlil is also the launch point for the 2- to 3-day Toubkal trek, so it works beautifully as either a day taster or the gateway to a real mountain adventure.
