Yes — Essaouira is a relaxed, breezy Atlantic port with a walkable UNESCO medina, fresh seafood, ramparts and a laid-back arts and surf scene. It is the perfect calm counterpoint to Marrakech, easily reached as a day trip or, better, an overnight, two to three hours west by road.

Essaouira is many travellers' favourite "decompression" stop. After the intensity of Marrakech, this walled fishing town on the Atlantic feels wonderfully easy: the medina is compact and far less hassly, the Atlantic wind keeps it cool even in summer, and you can stroll the ramparts, watch the blue boats come in, and eat grilled fish straight off the harbour.

The town has real character beyond just being relaxing. The 18th-century Skala ramparts and bastions are atmospheric (and recognisable from screen, including Game of Thrones), the medina is a UNESCO site full of art galleries, woodwork and argan-oil shops, and there is a strong music heritage — the Gnaoua World Music Festival each June is a highlight. The wide beach is a major windsurfing and kitesurfing spot thanks to the famous trade winds.

On logistics: Essaouira is around two and a half to three hours from Marrakech by good road, which makes it doable as a long day trip — but I usually encourage an overnight. The town is at its best in the early morning and evening once the day-trippers leave, and a single night lets you enjoy a sunset on the ramparts and a relaxed seafood dinner without rushing back.

Who should skip it? If your trip is very short and centred on the desert, Essaouira pulls you in the opposite direction and may not be worth the road time. But for anyone with a week or more who wants coast, calm and good food woven into their route, it is one of the easiest "yes" decisions in Morocco.
