It depends what you want from winter sun. The Canaries win for guaranteed warm beach weather and easy resort relaxation. Morocco wins for culture, variety and value, with milder, cooler days inland. For pure beach lounging pick the Canaries; for a richer winter trip with some sun (Agadir, Marrakech), pick Morocco.
I'll be straight with you, because honesty serves you better than loyalty here: for guaranteed, reliable winter beach weather, the Canary Islands genuinely have the edge. Sitting off the African coast, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura enjoy warm, dry, swimmable conditions all winter — low-to-mid 20s°C, a sea you can actually get into, and a slick resort infrastructure built precisely for sun-starved northern Europeans. If your single goal is to lie on a warm beach in January, the Canaries are the safer bet.
Morocco's winter is more nuanced. The popular inland cities — Marrakech, Fes — have lovely mild, sunny days in the high teens to low 20s°C but cool down sharply at night, and they aren't beach destinations. The desert is gorgeous in winter by day but genuinely cold after dark. For actual beach warmth you'd head to Agadir or the southern coast, which are mild and pleasant but not as dependably hot as the Canaries. So as a pure winter-beach swap, Morocco is a step down in guaranteed sun.
Where Morocco pulls decisively ahead is everything beyond the beach. The Canaries are about relaxation, volcanic scenery and resort comfort; they're not culturally rich. Morocco offers a real journey — medinas, riads, the Sahara, the Atlas, extraordinary food and craft, and far more to do than sunbathe. Winter is actually a wonderful time to explore Moroccan cities precisely because the fierce summer heat is gone, and the flight from Europe is similar, with Morocco often better value once you're there.
So if you want dependable winter beach warmth and easy resort relaxation, choose the Canary Islands — they're purpose-built for it. If you want a richer, more interesting winter escape with mild sunny days, culture and adventure (and you'll happily layer up for cool evenings and swap the beach for a medina), choose Morocco. They're really answering different questions — where's reliably warm, versus where's a great winter trip — so be honest with yourself about which you're actually asking.
