Pick China if you want vast scale, continent-sized distances and monumental history — the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, terracotta warriors. Pick Morocco for intimate, walkable history — living medieval medinas, kasbahs and the Sahara — packed into a compact, easy country near Europe. China is epic and sprawling; Morocco is dense and human-scaled.

China is in a league of its own for sheer scale and the weight of millennia — the Great Wall snaking over mountains, the Forbidden City, the terracotta army, the Bund, landscapes from Guilin's karsts to the Tibetan plateau. If your appetite is for monumental, civilisation-defining history across an almost continental canvas, China delivers on a level Morocco simply can't match in size. I say that plainly: nothing in Morocco rivals the Great Wall for scale, and I'd never pretend otherwise.

But scale cuts both ways. China is enormous, and a real trip means long internal flights or high-speed-rail hauls between far-flung highlights, more planning, language and bureaucracy (including visas), and a lot of ground to cover. The history is spectacular but often experienced as grand set-pieces you travel between. That's thrilling for some and exhausting for others, and it asks a lot of time and energy, especially on a first visit from far away.

Morocco's gift is history you walk straight into, at human scale. The medinas of Fes and Marrakech aren't reconstructed monuments — they're living medieval cities where the same trades, alleys and rhythms have continued for a thousand years, and you're inside them, not observing from a rope line. Add the kasbahs of the south, Roman Volubilis, the imperial cities, and the Sahara, and you get a remarkably dense layering of history and landscape in a country you can genuinely cross by road in a week. It's intimate where China is immense, and far closer and simpler to reach from Europe.

So my honest verdict: if your heart is set on epic, once-in-a-lifetime scale and you have the time and budget for a big, logistically heavier trip, China is extraordinary and worth every effort. If you want rich, continuous, living history you can step into and feel — without long internal flights, complex logistics or a long-haul commitment — Morocco gives you depth, variety and ease in one compact, welcoming package. Different sizes of wonder; both genuinely rewarding.
