Take the train if you want the cheapest, fastest, most reliable transfer — about 3 hours, frequent departures, no traffic. Choose a private driver for door-to-door comfort, luggage ease, stops along the way and travel on your own schedule. Train for value and speed; driver for convenience and flexibility.

On this specific route the train is genuinely excellent, which is not something I say lightly. Morocco’s ONCF service links Casablanca and Marrakech in around three hours, runs frequently throughout the day, is comfortable (first class is worth the small upgrade), and is inexpensive. It skips all road traffic and is reliably on time. For solo travellers, couples on a budget, or anyone who just wants to get between the two cities efficiently, I usually recommend the train first — it is one of the best-value transfers in the country.

A private driver wins on convenience and control. You are collected from your hotel door and dropped at your riad’s nearest point, your luggage is handled, you leave exactly when you want, and you can stop en route — a detour to El Jadida’s Portuguese cistern, a coastal lunch, or a comfort break on your terms. For families with lots of bags and small children, travellers with mobility needs, or anyone who values door-to-door ease over saving money, the driver is the more comfortable, less stressful option.

The honest trade-offs are straightforward. The train is cheap and fast but you still need taxis at both ends (Casablanca’s Casa-Voyageurs station and Marrakech’s station to your riad), it can be crowded in peak season, and you are tied to the timetable with luggage to manage on platforms. The private driver removes all of that but costs several times more, and on this particular route the road offers little scenery you would otherwise miss — so you are paying purely for comfort, not for a better journey.

My rule for this leg: default to the train unless you have a specific reason not to. It is fast, frequent, cheap, and avoids traffic — hard to beat for a straightforward city-to-city hop. Choose the private driver if you are a family with heavy bags, you want guaranteed door-to-door comfort, you are on a tight or odd schedule, or you would genuinely enjoy a coastal stop along the way. Both work well; this is one of the few routes where the train is so good I rarely upsell the car.
